[Solved] Short Read error - unable to mount my backup drive

Heya everyone, I ran into a problem which has been frustrating me and I would appreciate any help possible to fix it.

I started getting the errors below and I would like to recover because the drive has some some stuff which I really need and don't have anywhere else..
Figures this would happen while I was waiting for my backup drive to come in..

I started getting errors on my drive at start up.
When I try double clicking on the drive to mount it.. I get the following error message:
Error mounting /dev/sda at /run/media/wolf/Back up: Command-line `mount -t "ext4" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid" "/dev/sda" "/run/media/wolf/Back up"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda,
missing codepage or helper program, or other error

When I run dmesg as suggested I get:
dmesg tail

Then I checked with fsck:
fsck.ext4 /dev/sda

fsck.ext4: Attempt to read block from filesystem resulted in short read while trying to open /dev/sda
Could this be a zero-length partition?

I followed that up with :

smartctl -a /dev/sda

Re: [Solved] Short Read error - unable to mount my backup drive

Is the drive partitioned?  It appears that you are trying to mount /dev/sda.  If it is partitioned, one one expect it to be /dev/sda1 , sda2, sda3...
What is the output of ls /dev/sda*
?

Re: [Solved] Short Read error - unable to mount my backup drive

I had it formatted as ext4 I don't quite remember if I had it partitioned..as I used it as a storage drive..I had it mounted as backup...but not on my fstab. It worked for several months..
Sorry if that isn't useful..

ls /dev/sda* gave me :

/dev/sda

Re: [Solved] Short Read error - unable to mount my backup drive

That sure looks like it is not partitioned.  At least the kernel does not think it is.  Check it for sure with sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda
If there are no partitions, then I am afraid I am out of ideas.

Re: [Solved] Short Read error - unable to mount my backup drive

I did sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda and got:

Disk /dev/sda: 931.5 GiB, 1000204886016 bytes, 1953525168 sectors
Units: sectors of 1 * 512 = 512 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes

Could this be a corrupted superblock?

Re: [Solved] Short Read error - unable to mount my backup drive

Well..The corrupted superblock led me down the right path...Although the short read error was related to corrupted inodes. This was a nightmare..I don't know how it happened.. fsck.ext4 -v /dev/sda  allowed me to repair it enough to grab what I needed..
Cheers and thanks for your help !
