How do I install XFCE4?

I would think it would be something like "pacman -S xfce4", but after searching the older forum messages - it looks a lot more complicated than that.  One message looked like I had to download about 20 pieces and compile from scratch using "abs".

Is there some kind of meta-package that will pull down the most common parts?

I used fluxbox on Gentoo, and I saw that listed in the 'unstable' branch (ver 0.9).  After seeing some screenshots of XFCE4, it looked nice and lean, with just a few bells and whistles.  Since XFCE4 has it's own package section, does that mean it is the 'favorite' desktop on AL?  It looks nice.

thx!

Re: How do I install XFCE4?

Amazingly enough it is that easy.  'pacman -S xfce4' will install everything you need for xfce4.  There is a group now, and group support in pacman, for it.  The message you were reading probably was before group support existed.

fluxbox isn't in unstable.  It's in extra.  That doesn't mean it's any less stable.

PS: If you thought that would be the command to install it, why didn't you try it?

Fear, lol.  I'm totally new to Arch Linux, and I was afraid of goofing it up and not being able to fix it.

thx!

Re: How do I install XFCE4?

Just don't forget to run xfce4 via...

startxfce4

...instead of...

startx

...or to edit your .xinitrc entry to match startxfce4 so xfce4 starts with startx as well.

xfce4 is a desktop environment but lighter then its counterparts gnome and kde. it is also not quite a feature rich or bloated, however you wish to state it.

Actually, you need to install at least xfce4 and xfce4-plugins groups to get a fully working xfce4 desktop.

Re: How do I install XFCE4?

Did I get the group when I ran "pacman -S xfce4", or is there more stuff I should install?  I want The Full Monty.   wink
