I don't have the current install cd, but if you can boot it and switch to a console, you should be able to do what mic64 did.

Re: 2.6.15-archck3: Community PKG + PKGBUILDs

Uhmm. I just did a pacman -Syu..
And I got this:
:: kernel26-2.6.14.4-2: ignoring package upgrade (to be replaced by kernel26archck-2.6.15.archck2-2)
:: kernel26-2.6.14.4-2: ignoring package upgrade (2.6.15-2)

What's up with that?

Re: 2.6.15-archck3: Community PKG + PKGBUILDs

I was able to boot with the CD kernel, and chroot into my /dev/hda6 installation, but...

Mr Green wrote:

I would say so long as you can chroot into your system then you could just run pacman -S kernel26 .... set up lilo/grub

I cannot download anything, as there is "network unreachable". Anybody knows how to install the CD's kernel with pacman? /dev/cd is empty sad

last question, on this new release, following Gensplash  would get me a splash???

yeah it does, but I was rather confused about it too...

I had to put this line in grub:

kernel (hd0,0)/kernel26 root=/dev/md0 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-32@70 splash=verbose,theme:darch console=tty1

Maybe this should be put a bit more clear in the wiki. Also can someone explain these options? I've it running now, but I don't know what I did put into grub :-p

But for now I have a graphical booting AND raid running, great work iphitus :-)
(you just have to alter /etc/mkinitramfs.conf just as /etc/mkinitrd.conf)

And now I know the reason why my boot partition is a separate drive and isn't mounted automatically ;-)

Re: 2.6.15-archck3: Community PKG + PKGBUILDs

The newest version of archck kernel doesn't like my vga=0x318 or vga=773 kernel boot parameter anymore. It says "You specified an undefined resolution" or something similiar. Could this be because of the radeonfb-patch? Any ideas?

Do you have IgnorePkg = kernel26 in /etc/pacman.conf?

I always thought it was ok - you follow the link for the grub example, and you get that exact line. It's a wiki, though - you can always clarify it yourself. smile

Follow the links to the gensplash dev page, and the Gentoo howto.

Re: 2.6.15-archck3: Community PKG + PKGBUILDs

I'm glad I said "no" to this update (because I wondered why kernel26 should be replaced with kernel26archck), but I'm really concerned about putting a new kernel into community repo when it's not fully tested. Yeah, you can blame me for having community in my pacman.conf if you want but... being bleeding edge on the costs of a broken system is not what I've expected from an otherwise stable and well maintained system. Yes, people can make mistakes, I don't blame you for that. But you should better check and counter-check what looks to be made up in an overnight session...

Anyway, I hope this will end up with contented users and maintainers. Good luck!

Re: 2.6.15-archck3: Community PKG + PKGBUILDs

Susu, while I understand your concerns, the very term "bleeding edge" means things will break now and again.  You don't bleed if you're in perfect health, do you?  If you're worried about stability of kernel releases, do what I do; wait when a new one is released.
I'm using 2.6.14-archck, and I've just been sitting on this update until the forums die down a bit. wink

ok, but does anybody know what am I supposed to do? smile
after booting with install cd, and "vmlinuz root=/dev/hda6"
system comes up, I login as root, but no modules are loaded (lsmod shows nothing), and I don't have network... hmm
I haven't got kernel26 in /var/cache/pacman/pkg, so I can't go that way...
any ideas?

Or am I just using the wrong mirrors?

Re: 2.6.15-archck3: Community PKG + PKGBUILDs

Ive had a problem, when i use gensplash image i get a kernel panic :s below a detailed information:

First here's my HDD partiton table

hda5 -> /boot
hda6 -> /
hda7 -> swap
hda8 -> /home

Now when i boot with

title  Arch Linux ArchCk 2
root   (hd0,4)
kernel /vmlinuz26archck root=/dev/hda6 ro
initrd /initramfs-2.6.15-archck.img

I cant see boot progress i only see messages about vesafb (if you need info tell me i'll write it)

When i boot with

title Arch Linux ArchCk 2 Graphical
root   (hd0,4)
kernel /vmlinuz26archck root=/dev/hda6 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-32@70 quiet console=tty1
initrd /initramfs-2.6.15-archck.img

Everything boot good, i can see progress however i am seeing the below error message

Uncompressing Linux ... Ok, booting the kernel.
Initial RAMDISK Loading Modules...
mount:Mounting none on /proc failed: Device or ressource busy
mknod:/dev/null : File Exists
pivot_root: pivot_root: Invalid arguments
INIT: Version 2.86 booting

    > Arch Linux 0.7.1 (Noodle)

but all seem to work fine, i wonder if that message can be ignored

Now if i boot with

title Arch Linux ArchCk 2 + Splash
root   (hd0,4)
kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz26archck root=/dev/hda6 video=vesafb:ywrap,mtrr,1024x768-32@70 splash=verbose,theme:darch console=tty1
initrd (hd0,4)/fbsplash-darch-1024x768

gensplash is launched but i get a kernel panic sad see the below message

VFS: cannot open root device"hda6" or unknow-block(0,0)
Please appen a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS : Unable to mount root fs on unknow-block(0,0)

Do anyone have an idea on what's going on please?
Thx!

Re: 2.6.15-archck3: Community PKG + PKGBUILDs

I don't know if anyone else has tried suspend2 with initramfs yet, but it's not working for me, with my own custom kernel or with the archck kernel. Here's what I've got so far:

My original non-initramfs 2.6.15-archck2 kernel suspends and resumes perfectly, using the same suspend config that I've had for quite a while.

With no changes to the image generated by mkinitramfs, both my custom initramfs kernel and the archck kernel suspend as expected, but ignore the suspend image on reboot, and start up normally. However, the swap space is not activated correctly, as it is occupied by the suspend image. I have to do mkswap and swapon to get it back.

If I edit the initramfs image as advised in the suspend2 HOWTO (see one of my previous posts), both my kernel and archck suspend normally, AND detect the suspend image on reboot. However, the following error message is then displayed:

=== Suspend2 ===

BIG FAT WARNING!! Failed to translate "/dev/hda5" into a device id.

If you want to use the current suspend image, reboot and try
again with the same kernel that you suspended from. If you want
to forget that image, continue and the image will be erased.
Press SPACE to reboot or C to continue booting with this kernel

Default action if you don't select one in 25 seconds is: continue booting.

I continue booting, and a couple of lines later I get

Suspend2 2.2-rc16: Missing or invalid storage location (resume2= parameter). Please correct and rerun lilo (or equivalent) before suspending.

The same problem with the swap occurs in this case as well.

As I mentioned, my resume2 parameter is the same as it's always been (swap:/dev/hda5) and works fine without initramfs.

I'm inclined to think this is an upstream thing, but I wouldn't mind hearing any thoughts anyone (but particularly you, iphitus smile ) might have before I go digging in that direction.

Re: 2.6.15-archck3: Community PKG + PKGBUILDs

Gandalf - this

initrd (hd0,4)/fbsplash-darch-1024x768

is no use with an initramfs kernel, as it only provides the information required by fbsplash. The fbsplash theme is now specified in /etc/mkinitramfs.conf, so these details are now included in initramfs-2.6.15-archck.img, along with the essential stuff required to boot your system - hence the kernel panic.

I'm seeing those other errors (pivot_root etc) as well, but like you, with no apparent ill-effects.

wt - can you not get hold of a Live CD somewhere? I can't think of any other way to sort you out.

Verbose mode works, although text background is black and not transparent.
The question is how to get initscripts patched for silent fbsplash.
The initscripts-gensplash package found in community is for 0.7 and not 0.7.1.

Yeah, someone should try the existing initscripts-gensplash package in [community]. I don't use silent mode myself, but as dibble said on page 2 of this thread, he'd like to know if it still works or if it needs some changes.

Re: 2.6.15-archck3: Community PKG + PKGBUILDs

I just tried it, first it does something nasty which is replace rc.conf instead of patching the existing one, it's ok i just add changes myself from rc.conf.initscripts-gensplash to rc.conf
but i does not work i still don't see any image while booting, only ordinary stuff in graphical mode plus Arch logo will dispear at the stage od Loading Modules... sad

ok, the solution was simple: edit "kernel" and "init" in grubmenu just like Gandalf said, and then everything went smooth. I replaced archck with the kernel26 from current and now it's like in the good old days wink
