I have just installed steam, and everything seems to be working fine. I have installed Team Fortress 2 and Left4Dead2, and both start up fine. With both, however, when I join a server or start a single player game, it loads half way and then everything freezes. I can't switch sessions or move my mouse or anything. The only thing I can do is hard shut down. Has anyone else seen this behavior?

Yes. I havnt had it since I picked apart and dusted of my graphics card though. My gpu temp was always very critical when it happened. So that might do the trick. Otherwise it's probably a driver issue?

I'm not sure that's this issue. I can run unigine-sanctuary just fine at 1920x1080 getting ~30 fps. I'll try dusting it off though and let you know how that works.

Or you could just check the temperature of the gpu. But Im no linux wiz, just a suggestion, if it doesnt work I got no where to go from there. Just had the same problem and thats how I fixed it.

Is there a way to get the GPU temp from within linux. I do not have a temp gun or anything.

Check the output of sensors and of acpi -t
Depending on where your system's sensors are, and how they are accessed, those commands may work.

Unfortuanately acpi can not access the temperature in my system. I don't think that's the issue, though. Does anyone know where steam logs things like this? or even if it does?

Hi,
you can try /tmp/dumps/$(whoami)_stdout.txt while steam is running. But i dont think that this will include some sensor-data.

I don't need sensor data. I just want to see some crash log or something. The system completely hoses up, and I have no clue what's happening.

Whats your system specc? GPU / drivers
I have the same problem, not only with steam but with GPU load in general.
After ~5 minutes the x server becomes unresponsive and the box freezes.
The temperature is fine, something about 70°-80° but thats OK for r9 280x
The xorg log says following:
(EE) Not enough video memory to allocate CMM buffer (width = ..., height = ..., alignment = ...).
GPU: HIS R9 280x / fglrx 13.12

Geforce GTX 460 is my card and I'm using the nvidia / nvidia multilib package, but unsure exactly what driver it is. I have been able to play some games: 0a.d. and Minecraft, but unable to play: Fez, Left4Dead2, and Team Fortress 2.
