Switching between DVI and HDMI on ATI graphics cards

I am using 2 monitors as my main displays, one on the VGA output, the other on DVI.  I also have a television that I want to hook up to the HDMI output.  Whenever I plug in the HDMI cable to the TV, the monitor on the DVI immediately shuts off (regardless of whether the TV is actually on).  I only ever want to use the TV output when I'm watching movies or using my computer as a media PC.  The rest of the time, the two desktop monitors are preferred.  Based on the location of my TV, it is very difficult to have to unplug the HDMI cable every time I finish with the HDMI output.  Is there any way (perhaps a kernel parameter) I can control when arch gives preference to the HDMI port vs. the DVI port?

Hardware:
Asus M4A785-M motherboard with Ati HD4200 integrated graphics

Arch Linux, using open-source Radeon drivers, both Gnome3 and XFCE desktop environments.

If I code something, it's probably at https://github.com/kellcodes
