So I just ran a pacman -Syu and rebooted.
Blank screen for about 30 minutes and then it came up with some emergency mode.
I tried to follow the advice on screen to do systemctl reboot and default but get an error message regarding not being able to find "libgcrypt" so I downgraded it to the previous version and now it just fails silently.
still in emergency mode.
also trying to downgrade the kernel results in GPGME error and "invalid or corrupted database" error
Help.
edit: looking at dmesg it seems like systemd-journal-flush.service has entered a failed state and restarted several times

In case anyone else runs into a similar issue.
I figured that this was a corrupted package issue so I booted to the live media and reinstalled any packages that I thought may have issues. It's likely that reinstalling libgcrypt and then systemd fixed it. reboot and all is good.
