[SOLVED] KDM Black Screen After Startup

KDM screen goes fully black after successful startup. No errors in journalctl for startup, but for shutdown it says there's an error in terminating kdm.

Oddly, I can't switch ttys at this point, but if I enter my password blindly and hit enter, kdm logs me in as normal and everything is fine.

If you updated recently, you might want to check that you have updated kdmrc to the new version saved as kdmrc.pacnew. I have found that KDE does this from time to time over the years, and tidying up is a good place to start

Re: [SOLVED] KDM Black Screen After Startup

It's a new install, so it was installed up to date, but I checked anyays, and there's no .pacnew file. It worked the first few logins and no updates have been made to KDE since the problem.

Re: [SOLVED] KDM Black Screen After Startup

I'm not sure this is the answer you are looking for, but you could try to bypass KDM entirely and enter KDE directly by editing your .xinitrc to include the line:

exec startkde

If you don't have an .xinitrc, install the xorg-xinit package, and do this on your user log-in:

cd ~
nano .xinitrc

Then include the "startkde" line above.  Of course, this is not the best of practices as it is usually better to copy an existing .xinitrc and work from there (the line should already exist in the skeleton version; it just needs to be uncommented):

cp /etc/skel/.xinitrc ~

I have had trouble with using KDM and GDM for about a year and have just been running this "bypass".  Hope this helps.

Re: [SOLVED] KDM Black Screen After Startup

That's what I ended up doing, but it was still cause for concern... the problem somehow got worse and the ttys ended up going blank today. Installing uvesafb and adding the v86d hook solved the problem. Thanks for the reply big_smile .

Re: [SOLVED] KDM Black Screen After Startup

My laptop went into hibernate and the problem came up again, and remaking the initramfs fixed it. Another user said he had the same problem and it was being caused by laptop-mode-tools (which I'm not using). Is there additional power-saving enabled in the kernel by default for laptops?
