Maybe you could do it with acpi - the way you could use that to catch events for sleeping etc. before systemd took over most of those functions? (Well, it still works with acpi as far as I know but it is simpler to use systemd.) That is, if these are "special" keys of some sort?

Not really sure - just a thought.

@cfr, I just want to point out that what you are thinking of is acpid. There is also an acpi command in the official repos, and it simple gives a brief overview of the power/thermal state of your machine.

just for anyone that stumbles upon this while searching, if you would like to be able to add a new xkb file to the gnome dialog you need to modify the xml file /usr/share/x11/xkb/rules/evdev.xml to include the new file and option (that come up as a configItem and a layout, just look at how it's done and copy the format)

I'll try that, I'd really like to have a "fr_CA@euro" keyboard layout. Or something similar.
I think even better would be to patch the current fr_CA keyboard (why having $ and £ but no euro sign?)

You could also switch to bépo, a keymap that was made to type in French (and English, to a lesser extent, but it should be better than azerty and qwerty anyway).

Your mileage may vary depending on your language of choice, but I think it’s ok at least for C, Lua and bash, and probably most languages (maybe not brainfuck ). A few characters require shift to be pressed unlike on the qwerty keymap (‘!’ and ‘;’ for example). Also all numbers require shift, like on the azerty keymap.

Well coming from fr_FR and fr_CA, the ! and ; manipulations don't afraid me that much. As for the numbers, I can still use numpad for long numbers.
The hardest part would be to learn this new layout with the wrong letters on the keys!

Japanese layouts are almost complete to edit by your way. I splashed some water into a few keys (g,h,i) and had to reassign them.
here. Put some stickers on your new keys, you'd get to it in a day or so

It’s actually no big deal since with bépo you’re supposed to touch type without looking at the keyboard . You could also get a Typematrix with a bépo skin, but it’s not cheap.
