I have just finished a fresh install of arch 32bit but I don't have any sound from my speakers on my laptop. When I plug in headphones I get sound from them. I am using ALSA and Pulse Audio with GNOME i have checked my volume levels both in ALSA and Pulse Audio and turned them up and still nothing. Also in pulse audio it shows my speakers as (unavailable). Also the icons and Port drop down box on both GNOME and Pulse Audio keep rapidly chaning from speakers to headphones. I have tried reinstalling both ALSA and Pulse Audio with no luck. I know my speakers work as this morning I had Linux Mint on the laptop and the sound worked then from the speakers.

Decided to reinstall Arch using the 3.10 LTS kernel and now my speakers work fine. Must be an issue with the 3.12 kernel.

I had exact issue a month ago and solved it by "reseting" Pulse configuration. I stopped pulse with the -k switch, deleted /var/lib/alsa/* and ~/.config/pulse/. After reboot, everything was back in normal.
It's all GNU to me.

Okay, so it seems that there is an issue with the kernel indeed. Newly released 3.13.2 fixes this, but needs further testing:
Hui Wang (3):
ALSA: hda - automute via amp instead of pinctl on some AIO models
ALSA: hda - add headset mic detect quirks for some Dell machines
ALSA: hda - add headset mic detect quirks for another Dell laptopIt's all GNU to me.

Kernel upgrade didn't help. Currently using Linux 3.15.1, and I tried specifying various models for snd-hda-intel kernel module, but it didn't help.
I found some people on Gentoo having the same issue.
Stuartm666, did you try to upgrade the kernel later?
It's all GNU to me.

Having the same problem with arch installed on my iMac. Same problem with my Ubuntu 14.04 install. Glad to see it's not just on the iMac. (Glad because I thought it would be harder to figure out)

I'm having this issue as well. Funny, because it just started last night. pavucontrol insists that Headphones are always "(plugged in)", and that Speakers are always "(not available)". Seems to have been triggered by suspending with headphones plugged in, and unplugging the headphones before waking the device (oops...), but no amount of file removal has fixed this (including the above path removals mentioned).
This is on a Haswell chipset Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro.

Currently running Arch on a Samsung Chromebook Pro (dual booted with ChromeOS), and various VPSes and Docker containers.
