Browser constantly crashes, cant find problem

I have 2 Arch PC's one for me and one for the wife, both re-installed about the same time (recently to do a clean install with the latest systemd/grub2, etc stuff). NO issues at all for mine, always up-to-date and never crashes, very stable, using the same google-chrome-dev pkg, updated daily if there are new updates. The OS on both is perfectly fine, very fast and has no issues. No other application issues. However, her Chrome browser will crash almost daily for some reason. I have tried Firefox also and I think its crashing too. This has been going on for years so I don't think its any bad install or anything. I have re-installed the google-chrome-dev many times (removed profile data too) but same issue eventually. I just removed that pkg, and installed Chromium and it worked great for a week then started crashing. I also have tried with no extensions and it crashes also soon enough.

I also tried every combination of flash (Adobe vs Google/pepper, java vs open-jdk etc) and still the same issue. She needs to have flash java, etc. In fact i have the same combination setup on mine which works perfect.

On mine, I use the same google-chrome-dev and have maybe 1 crash per YEAR if that. It is super stable! She has similar HW (AMD 64-bit quad core, Samsung SSD, etc) so its pretty decent. I started on xfce then read it could be related to the DM, so i switched to KDE. That seemed to work for a month but it soon came back. I also had LXDE for some time in the past.

I did just notice /var/log/journal was filling up, but not sure if those files would have anything to do with the browser crash, but i did delete them yesterday. It crashed again today. Also once in a while, her mouse cursor will freak out and change to some wierd display and will only be fixed by logging out of X or rebooting. I also notice some USB errors in the BIOS boot-up so maybe this is USB related, as strange as it sounds?

Logs filling up means the computer is trying to tell you something. Filling up quickly means it's yelling. Full logs are not the cause of the problem, but they would likely be diagnostic - so deleting them just removed the needed information. If they're filling up again, check what they actually say.

I hear ya! Just was not sure if that was related to the browser or not. I will keep checking them as soon as it starts logging.

My browsers (all of them) started crashing a lot the last few days.

Firefox simply disappears, Opera restarts, Chromium is full of "Oh Jimmy something went wrong" tabs.
This is happening to the extent that I can hardly work, and I can't find the source of it.

I am using the opensource ATI drivers.

It never occured to me to check on the graphics drivers, I'll check my logs to see if the driver update coincides with the crashes.

I would start by running a memtest86+ overnight, random segfaults are often caused by faulty hardware, and RAM is regularly the guilty suspect.

Mind you that quite a few people seem to be getting these weird issues (Firefox disappearing; lots of defunct processes) lately. There is some correlation with the Nvidia blob and a recent update; there doesn't seem to be any progress in coming to grips with it, sadly.

Ok, Chrome started crashing again and twice in the last 10 mins. I just looked at the journal logs using journalctl and found nothing for this time frame. /var/log/journal is also not taking up a LOT of space like it did before but still no clue of what could be causing the crashes from there. I think it could be HW, as was recently posted. I may try to run a memtest overnight and report back soon. I have a 95% similar arch install and same jre/flash/chrome with NO issues ever.
I am also using these for Video drivers: xf86-video-ati

I went inside my BIOS and change the ROM from "EFI Compatible" to "Legacy BIOS".

It was the only thing that was changed in the last 2 weeks. Browsers behave better now, way better.

Same issue here for chromium on an relatively old intel laptop. Many tabs display the error page. All have flash installed in some way. Maybe it's a rendering issue? (i.e. xorg-server?)

I'd go a step further: I had a machine with bad memory which always *PASSED* the memtest86 (several runs). All weeks I had some crash in firefox or eclipse. One rare day even gcc crashed compiling a program (not a gcc bug: it worked re-running)... and then I suspected on bad memory. I usually do not compile the linux kernel, but this was the best test: the system was not able to compile a linux kernel a single time (gcc always crashed: sometimes 5 minutes after starting, sometimes after 15 minutes of work). I used kernel compilations to determine the defective memory DIMM. Once replaced, firefox (and some other apps, like eclipse) never crashed again.

The linux kernel compilation may be the best memory tester!

I disabled hardware rendering, got rid of 90% of the crashes which is acceptable for daily use.
