Re: [SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure

So the past few days, I've been running FF Nightly with no terminal in the background and I haven't experienced any crashes. Even sites which seemed to guarantee a crash previously (namely slacker.com) are not a problem. Can anyone else feedback on their recent experiences?

I'm still getting crashes even with everything up to date. It worked for a while then now after rebooting it's suddenly crashing all the time again. Something is seriously wrong because it's not just Firefox that is acting strange. Terminals are weird too. For example resizing them does not always update the size within applications (eg. "screen") and often control commands don't work at all (CTRL-Z, etc). VirtualBox is also broken with incorrect permissions on its devs in /dev plus it will not boot XP machines if running under MATE or KDE (works in XFCE though).

It could all just be coincidence but I sense a serious low-level systemic problem.

I'm glad I'm not the only one seeing the issues with the terminals acting strange (resizing, ctrl-z, etc.).   Downgrading to linux-3.11.6-1 and nvidia-325.15-10 fixes those problems for me.  (I haven't been experiencing all the other problems reported with the new kernel/nvidia, but I don't use firefox...)

For those who don't have the packages in the cache still, the Arch Rollback Machine saved me.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure

I turned off hardware acceleration in Firefox as was recommended above and had no problems. That was on 28/12/13. Updating almost every day since then. Today, the problem is back with a vengeance. Three crashes in less than two hours. No terminal messages to help. FWIW, I also have a Solydx install, basically Debian Testing with few scripts. Starting Firefox from the terminal gives me the same startup error  "GLib-CRITICAL **: g_slice_set_config: assertion 'sys_page_size == 0' failed" , though I'm unconviced that this is relevant. With Solydx, Firefox doesn't crash. the entire system freezes.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure

I'm facing the same issue since yesterday. Firefox crashes after asking me about main password. In safe starts correctly.
What's interesting it looks like profile issue because after creating new profile with HW acceleration enabled and all plugins and addons same as in old profile then I have no crashes as far. So I'll try to move all my old profile data to new one. Maybe the issue is in opened tab list?

Some console output:

[~]$ LANG=C firefox -new-instance

The strangest thing for me is that this is a huge problem if I start Firefox from a launcher/menu, but if I start it from a terminal the problem seems to completely disappear.

Yep, I noticed the same thing...

And this seems to be a recurring theme for me with Arch. Tomboy launched from the menu results in an unresponsive tray icon. Launched from a terminal? Works perfectly fine! The same was happening for the game Hammerwatch - worked fine if launched directly in a terminal, or if Steam was launched from a terminal, but if I launch Steam from the menu, the game crashes (unless I add LD_LIBRARY_PATH=:/usr/lib/mono %command% into the game's launch options...). I do not know what is going on, but it's really got me wondering about my future with Arch. And that sucks, because I've loved the month or two I've spent with the distro so far, other than these *really* annoying issues. I have searched and searched for several weeks, and come up with no solutions so far. The worst part is, other Arch users say things run fine for them (Hammerwatch players using Arch, posting on the Steam forums, for example). Very frustrating.

I've noticed this same problem, particularly with Guake and Steam. Now Firefox too. I'm getting the same failed assertion about sys_page_size == 0 that everyone else seems to be seeing, as well.
I've tried turning off extensions, sync, deleting cache, deleting everything, etc. Not much luck other than running in terminal.
Is anyone aware of why running things via terminal would be making such a difference here? Is that related to the nvidia driver still?

You had cache.  Some people clean it often like me

Nothing stopping you rebuilding an older version.
FWIW downgrading from the latest Firefox to 25.0.1-1 also eliminated all crashes for me.

I agree.  I've downgraded to 25.0.1-1 (using downgrade in the AUR) and so far so good.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure

Hi all,

This is my first post in this forum. I'm currently not using Arch but Debian Jessie, but I've come to this forum due to having this same problem.

At first the solution of disabling HW acceleration worked for a couple of days. I've solved this issue (up to date) following these steps:

1. Wipe out all NVIDIA propietary and nouveau drivers.
2. Installed latest NVIDIA propietary drivers.
3. Wiped out previous installation of flash_player from Adobe
4. Fresh installation of flash_player from adobe
5. Removed all .macromedia folders in home directories (for all users)

Regards.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure

Using firefox 27b2, crashed ever time when visiting evernote. Start firefox from command line or using safe mode will be fine. As shmibs said, it's a nvidia driver bug, so I switched to nouveau driver, works fine now.

Hi, went to both those versions then re-installed FF 26-02.

FF crashed soon after starting browsing which did not bode well. Still, decided to try it out for longer to get a better impression. I have just reverted to FF 25 again. The situation is much improved compared with before these two versions for kernel and nvidia. Had two crashes across a two hour period of using FF which is pretty good and a massive step in the right direction.

But two crashes too many, worry about FF crashing at bad time. This is why I reverted again.

Adding trying out nouveau driver to my to do list.

Appreciate the effort whoever is making it to look into FF + nvidia issue.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure

I had the same problem (also using latest proprietary NVIDIA drivers) and worked around the problem by downgrading to Firefox 25.

Thanks to jcasper for poiting me to the Arch Rollback Machine and Cotton for mentioning that Firefox 25 does not have the problem!

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure

Problem seems to have fixed itself for me.  Running latest Firefox from extra (26.0.2) and haven't seen a crash or freeze in a week.
Did install the latest updates, including X.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure

I've had the crashes sporadically for the last month or so. Sometimes firefox will stay up for days, at other times it'll crash several times in a few minutes.

I had crashes 15 min again or so ago (before reading through the thread). That was after updating my system an hour ago (on Linux 3.12.7-2 / Nvidia 331.38-1 / Firefox 26.0-2).

I hadn't restarted my system though, so I just did that. I'm about to leave for work, will see if it's still up when I get home and such.

EDIT: My keepass issues seem to be resolved though. It had still been having issues before I restarted, so I'm hopeful in regards to firefox.

EDIT2: Back home and FF is still running. We'll see if it's stays that way for a few days or not.

Re: [SOLVED] Firefox 26 Crashing - Assertion Failure

Linux 3.12.7-2 / Nvidia 331.38-1 / Firefox 26.0-2 - on this constellation Firefox is still crashing.

Edit: it WAS still crashing but I didn't restart my machine after updating packages.
Yesterday I updated system once again and restarted my machine. I didn't encounter crash while using FF for few hours. In case of any crash I'll post a message.

Going to tentatively say it's also solved for me, but

It may not be solved for everyone; is anyone else still experiencing the issue? Is Jakub still experiencing the issue?

Seeing as I haven't experienced any FF crashes for a long time now, plus pretty much everyone is reporting that it's fixed for them, I'm going to mark this thread as solved.
