I wrote a blog post about styling up Arch Linux. I spent a long time learning all of these things and thought it would be good to share with other people.
However, I'm not much of an expert, or a design guru, so anyone who would like to review the post and help me make it better is more than welcome.

Sorry, Karol and cheers for that. For some reason it had reverted to draft status. Fixed now

Thunar is the default file manager in Arch
Scrolled down and that was the first thing I saw... Completely wrong. I assume the rest of the article is as bad!

I prefer the 'Windows Classic' look to gradients and other eye-candy.
I'm using the default file manager i.e. the coreutils, I'm using dwm as my WM and I like it, so I'm not the target audience :-)

Haha, sorry I meant Xfce

Cool, thanks for taking a look, though.

Moving to Arch Discussion. I am thinking it should go to topics going nowhere eventually.

Sorry you don't like it. My intention was to help people turn their ugly system into something they like which I found can take quite a while when you're pretty new to arch.
Please delete the forum post and accept my apologies.

It doesn't have to be deleted, 'topics going nowhere' is not the same as the 'Dustbin' section of the forum.

In my opinion the default xfce setup is far superior to your customized version.

Not my intention. First, note that I moved to it to Arch Discussion, not to TGN. If, and when it is moved to topics going nowhere, it is not meant to be punitive. That is something that many people fail to understand. It may or may not happen, but if this thread devolves to where it will no longer be a usable resource for future users searching for information, it will move to TGN.

Ok, ewaller that makes total sense.
I'm a bit of a noob round here. Basically I'm a low-drama person. I want whatever is best for the forum and doesn't make me look silly.

Sorry OP, but I have to agree with teateawhy...

Both of your opinions are valid.
I tried to lay out the necessary steps someone could take to customise their desktop precisely how they want it to look. When I wrote the post I intended to separate the fact (how to change a setting) from the subjective (this style is better than that).
Maybe I should re-read it and try to be clearer what is my opinion and what are the technical steps that one would need to carry out in order to create an environment tailored to their specific preferences.

I personally didn't like your customized XFCE too. But hey -- taste is something personal! You don't need to be sad or take any offense from that. Anyway, well, one more post teaching how to style a desktop won't do any harm. I appreciate what you did.
But, IMHO, as you progress with Linux (mainly with Arch...), you will care less and less about 'beauty' and eye candy.

I think it's kind of misrepresenting Arch Linux to imply that any particular window manager or desktop environment is "default". For me the default is coreutils and whatever network packages are needed for pacman to reach the official repos. Certainly I install a bunch of stuff after that, but none of it is "default".
Maybe you should specify that you chose to use XFCE from out of all the options available, and it is the XFCE defaults you don't like, not the Arch Linux defaults.

Good call. Will update it now.
