Lost internet and k-mixer when de-selecting arts sound.
Please advise steps to restore internet access.
Don't know the connection between the two!!
Prediction...This year will be a very odd year!

what do you mean with deselect? remove the package? disable in kde at startup?
kmixer should not have anything to do with internet ...
how do you connect to internet? lan? ppp?
The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.

I agree that arts has no internet relationship but I reported that all the things happened at once after calling arts in kde and deselecting it in the arts window.
I have eth0 static IP connect to internet.
The message on the screen in restart says...try ..."network start"
I assume there is an arch related command line for this function.
I don't know what that command line format is..
Do you?

as root you can start network with this:
/etc/rc.d/network start

result of /etc/rc.d/network start...
SIOCSIFADDR no such device
eth0 no such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK no such device
eth0 no such device
SIOCADDRT network is unreachable
Eth0 is listed in /etc/rc.conf
What now????

what network card do you have?
Probably you have to modprobe or insmod it...

You didn't upgrade the kernel, I suppose, and omit to run lilo afterwards?
Otherwise, check with lsmod whether the module is running; if it cannot be inserted you will have to figure out why.

I had this failure immediately following the deselect of arts in kde.
What do I do in modprobe with realtek 8029...format?
I will look at lsmod and report back..

it sounds like whatever you did has messed with your system quite badly.
you should perhaps explain further this deselecting thing you did. as many of us probably have no idea what you are talking about.
other than that you should be able to modprobe or insmod your ethernet card module in.

I do not know how to modprobe my ethernet in....
If one has kde, one can select arts control center from kde in kde multimedia.
If such is selected, a window appears which has options for arts the first one of them has a box which permits arts to be selected for use or deselected.
When I deselected arts and returned to desktop, I had no kde mixer and subsequently discovered no internet either.
Kde mixer is an option in the arts control center window on a mixer tab but it wasn't disturbed.
I do not for one minute think it was arts that caused the loss of internet but am anxious to return internet access by any means.
I do not know how to format ..modprobe entry.... to establish internet control.
I have googled the internet and find instructions for other distros which do not work in arch so I am here to find out how to "network Start" or repair the loss of eth0 interface.

A little google search for the words "realtek 8029 modprobe" could help...
just type as root modprobe ne2k-pci or add it to your rc.conf in the section (modules).
Then adjust the settings in this file like ip-adress, gateway etc. ( as given you by your provider ).
Afterwards just do a normal (windows...)-like restart, and everything should be fine again.
I just have a problem with this arts thing. Wasn`t there anything you did before this stuff stopped working?

As posted earlier, my /etc.rc.conf has ne2-pci listed in modules and the eth0 internet data is entered and correct.
uname -a lists kernel 2.2.24-1 but vmlinuz is not present in root.
I am going to re-install arch in another drive.

but vmlinuz is not present in root.
Did you search under / or under /root ? vmlinuz should be in the /boot directory so a search under / should find it, but /root would not. It must be there somewhere otherwise your system would not boot.
However, as you are reinstalling I will not attempt further diagnosis!
