Can't get ripperX to encode

Noob here....

pacman installed
ripperx
lame

however ripperx doesn't encode the .mp3 file
it will read a cd track and write a .wav file
but the encoding doesn't go.

lame shows up in the mp3 available plugins inside ripperx

I can run lame from the command line and create the .mp3 file from the .wav file

So, a work around exists...

Any thoughts?

edit:
I forgot to mention that the term window outputs this:
sh: line 1:  2727 Broken pipe             lame 2>&1

edit again:
I do not have the following installed:
cdplay
splay
mpg123

The "players" tab of the configuration dialog defaults to these.
Do I NEED these and/or are there substitutes.
