Lenovo G505S boot problems

So, I bought a Lenovo G505S, and I want to run Arch on it. I have a HDD with an up-to-date Arch install on it, in fact I am using it right now, so this happened:

>I get into the GRUB menu and everything is normal
>select normal boot option
>BSOD (black screen of death, no words, no response to anything, just an endless black void)
>this can't be right
>reboot
>select the fallback option
>fallback shows that the freeze happens at "loading initial ramdisk"

I have determined that the kernel is probably missing some drivers required to deal with this laptop, and I don't know how to fix this. If anyone has any insight on how I would fix this I would greatly appreciate some help with this.

Thank you for your time.

PS: I have updated the BIOS to the latest version, and it appears to have no issues with Windows 8, so there do not appear to be any problems with the laptop itself.

UEFI booting? Could be the UEFI kernel bug...

Re: Lenovo G505S boot problems

There are a number of threads here about this issue: just search on UEFI and kernel versions. It is unresolved.

The other thing to try is to disable modesetting on the kernel line, to see if that gets you any further...

Re: Lenovo G505S boot problems

I don't think my system is set up as UEFI in the first place, and there does not appear to be any modesetting on the kernel line, unless quiet counts (modesetting messed with the FOSS ATI driver I think, so I removed it). legacy boot is in effect on the laptop as well, however the symptoms are similar to the ones in the UEFI threads, so I will need more information to locate the root problem.

Re: Lenovo G505S boot problems

I don't know anything about Windows, but I assumed that W8 only shipped with Secure Boot (UEFI). Modesetting would only be disabled on the kernel line.

The laptop ships with a legacy boot option, which I had to enable in order to get it to recognize the drive at all. I have the install set as a BIOS GPT install. That isn't working, so I will try making one of my experimental installs into a UEFI GPT (with secure boot if possible). Maybe Legacy BIOS support is broken, and has yet to be patched in a BIOS update.

Re: Lenovo G505S boot problems

I managed to convert my Arch install to EFI, and that fixed it. Apparently the Lenovo G505s does not support BIOS boot very well, but it's EFI support is just fine.
