iwlwifi dropping connections on networks with multiple APs

I'm on a Dell XPS 15 (L501X) with Intel wireless and I'm having a somewhat frustrating issue on certain Wi-Fi networks. Here at uni, the Wi-Fi network as a whole has the same SSID, but is broadcast across campus by multiple APs. In some situations, the Wi-Fi will work for a few minutes, drop out for five, then start working again. While it's disconnected, dmesg gets flooded with the following output

[ 50.433613] iwl data: 00000000: 1f 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 e0 ff 00 00 00 00 ................

...over and over. I've googled this issue, and found this thread on the Ubuntu forums of an identical issue. Someone linked to a Launchpad bug with this issue, but it was marked invalid with no explanation in May and obviously hasn't been fixed.

One solution, apparently, is to put the closest router's ESSID into NetworkManager explicitly, however this is not an option for me, as I roam campus to go to different classes, and am rarely in close proximity to a particular router.

Does anybody know of a fix to this problem? How should I go about notifying Linux Wireless about the issue?

Thanks!

Re: iwlwifi dropping connections on networks with multiple APs

Hi , to receive better help, more information would be nice like a lspci, lsmod, iwlist scan.  There is a sticky in 'newbie corner' on providing information which is highly recommended to read.

Some people do not experience this issue on older kernels (3.2) while others had success disabling 802.11n on the wifi module.   Have you tried going on a different kernel or disabling 802.11n to see if either or a combination resolves your issue?

Try not using network manager and using something else like wifi-menu/netctl.  Try to eliminate possible factors in the issue.  Also if you want to check upsteam bug reports, you can visit bugzilla.kernel.org and do a search there.

And a uname -a for good measure

Linux archbishop 3.12.8-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Thu Jan 16 09:16:34 CET 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Is anyone else having this issue? I'm at a loss in terms of what to do.

Re: iwlwifi dropping connections on networks with multiple APs

I'm having trouble with this too. It happened when I upgraded to the new linux-firmware. I was hoping 3.13 would fix things.

Re: iwlwifi dropping connections on networks with multiple APs

Have you tried other tools like systemd-networkd, connman, netctl, wicd etc?  I'm not too knowledgeable the connectivity for wifi and I can only suggest thoroughly trying other options that might function better for roaming AP with same names.

Re: iwlwifi dropping connections on networks with multiple APs

Just for clarity, the systemd-networkd that frank604 mentioned is not yet available in the Arch systemd package.  It has been merged into git and will ship with systemd 209.  It is also meant to be used for wired connections, though it can apparently be used in combination with wpa_supplicant@.service to connect wirelessly.

The other options he mentions are available though.

Re: iwlwifi dropping connections on networks with multiple APs

Woops!  I grab'd the list from !netctl off phrik without double checking on systemd-netword.  I shouldn't have posted it if I didn't know about it.  Thanks for the catch WonderWoofy!!

Re: iwlwifi dropping connections on networks with multiple APs

No problem.  I just didn't want the OP to go searching for something that is not yet widely available.

Re: iwlwifi dropping connections on networks with multiple APs

Have you tried booting for 3.10 kernel (linux-lts)?
I'm not sure if it's related but I had trouble with my wifi too, and we use two APs with same SSID too. It works on the LTS kernel.

Oddly enough, I removed NetworkManager and switched to pure netctl, and the problem seems to have gone away. I wonder if that indicates that it might not be a kernel problem?

I guess then our problems aren't related, because I tried a bunch of different methods to connect to the network, on LTS the first one works.
