Startup fails with Quadro 2000M

Hi everyone.  I've freshly installed Arch onto my Thinkpad W520.  My machine has Nvidia Optimus.  It boots OK when configured to use integrated graphics, but it freezes when using discrete graphics.  Sometimes, it freezes after

[  OK  ] Started udev Kernel Device Manager.

Sometimes it makes it to the login prompt but doesn't respond to the keyboard.  After hanging for a few seconds, the fan starts blowing full-blast, so it must be doing something with the hardware.  One weird part is that I don't even have X installed yet.

I noticed that the Arch installer uses the nouveau driver with my discrete card, so I installed xf86-video-nouveau.  But that didn't seem to help.

These are my BIOS settings:

Graphic Device: Discrete Graphics
OS Detection for NVIDIA Optimus: Disabled

Please let me know if anyone has ideas. I'd like to provide some logs, but am not sure how since startup is not finishing.
