[SOLVED] what headers do I need to build oss

Hi All,

I'm trying to run the open sound system but my problem is this:

[root@StudioA a]# soundoff && soundon
OSS not loaded.
Relinking OSS kernel modules for "3.12.8-1-ARCH SMP preempt mod_unload modversions "
This may take few moments - please stand by...

OSS build environment set up for REGPARM kernels

Warning: Cannot locate the Linux kernel development package for
         Linux kernel version  3.12.8-1-ARCH
         Please install the kernel development package if linking the
         OSS modules fails.

The kernel development package may be called kernel-devel, kernel-smp-devel,
kernel-sources, kernel-headers or something like that. Please refer
to the documentation of your Linux distribution if there are any
difficulties in installing the kernel/driver development environment.

For your Linux distribution the right kernel source package
might be kernel-source.

Relinking the OSS kernel modules failed

I've seen this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 95#p673595 but the solution doesn't apply.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction?

Thanks!

Re: [SOLVED] what headers do I need to build oss

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/FA … ge_is_X.3F

$ pkgfile /usr/lib/modules/3.12.8-1-ARCH/build
core/linux-headers

Edit: Are you using the PKGBUILD from the AUR? https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/oss/ has linux-headers as one of the dependencies.

Re: [SOLVED] what headers do I need to build oss

Thanks for the reply, and I'm sorry for not being more specific. I have core/linux-api-headers 3.12.4-1 [installed] and core/linux-headers 3.12.8-1 [installed] but this error persists.

So does the dir in question exist?

Re: [SOLVED] what headers do I need to build oss

It doesn't exist on my machine, because I've just updated the kernel:

$ ls /usr/lib/modules/3.12.8-1-ARCH/build
ls: cannot access /usr/lib/modules/3.12.8-1-ARCH/build: No such file or directory
$ pacman -Q linux
linux 3.13-1

Maybe OP did update the kernel and did not reboot.

I'm not sure which diectory you mean or where I might find it (because I have very little experience with these things)

But I did get this:

[a@StudioA ~]$ ls /usr/lib/modules/3.12.8-1-ARCH/build
arch           drivers    Kconfig   mm          scripts   virt
block           fs    kernel      Module.symvers  security  vmlinux
crypto           include    lib      net          sound
Documentation  init    Makefile  samples      usr
[a@StudioA ~]$

does this help? Also, this is a clean install from last night so the kernel has not been updated.

What's the output of 'lsmod | grep oss'?

Re: [SOLVED] what headers do I need to build oss

Run 'ossdetect -v' with sudo or as root.

When posting configs, code or command output, please use [ code ] tags https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

like this

It makes the code more readable and - in case of longer listings - more convenient to scroll through.

Re: [SOLVED] what headers do I need to build oss

karol, thanks for all your help. Maybe there were problems with the transition to the new kernel. I just built oss on Linux/x86_64 3.12.9-1-ARCH and it works as it should without any problems. Thanks for explaining about the code tag

 just a test

there used to be a little code icon that you clicked on, I haven't been on arch linux for a quite a while. Anyway, the problem is solved and I really appreciate your time spent helping.

Cheers

Re: [SOLVED] what headers do I need to build oss

I'm glad you made it work. I was positive it had something to do with the kernel version being off somewhere.
