Is there a reason I should use a login manager?
I just have startx in my shell profile (for one specific terminal) and .xinitrc to start my window manager.
But I've seen a lot of comments about login managers... Is the only reason to get a pretty picture at startup?

Login managers can be useful if you share your machine with other family members who would think the computer was broken if it just showed them a prompt.
Otherwise, they are just bloat.
On second thoughts, even in the first instance they are still bloat (like family members that don't know what a prompt is)...

pacman -Syyu family
Change your mirror if it doesn't work. Sometimes the best servers are in other countries. You'll get used to the new accents.

IMHO nope.
The more of such "things" you use, the more problems that you don't understand may appear... applies to me at least.
Maybe that's why there are so many comments...
I even use the automatic login for the console (see the wiki if you want).

There are a couple of bits of extra functionality that DM's can bring to the table, fast user switching springs to mind.

Pretty much. I just login through TTY and manually do startx when I hop into X. Sometimes I linger in TTY. It is up to you. Your choice and your own deemed cost/benefit.

I know that, but teaching it to the other users of my machine isn't worth the hassle when there's a menu option available called 'switch users'

Thanks for the answers. I'm the only user of my computer, so I'll just keep my current setup.

Where is a "Like" button when you need one?
