Google Summer of Code 2014

Hi guys.

It's still some time away, but what about participating in the Google Summer of Code 2014 this year ? It's an amazing opportunity which accounts for good projects being completed, adding new developers to the community and ultimately, getting good work done.

So does anyone out there have an idea or some work they've been thinking on for a while ? Fixing or supporting more compositors, adding support for Wayland, support or work on some backend application, LDAP stuff, optimizing servers, automating release processes for packages or just adding a web interface for a social networking feature ? Something which isn't niche and affects a wider audience would really help.

It would be great if some of the senior community members could step up and head this thing. Or point me to something similar. Serious projects ideas would be really welcome, and if anyone has any doubts, visiting a few of the following links should help:

Re: Google Summer of Code 2014

If someone wants to do this on an Arch based project (pacman hooks and parallel operations... see [1]) I will do the mentor stuff.  Maybe for other Arch based projects that interest me.

Re: Google Summer of Code 2014

I sent you a mail early on, when I saw your post. Maybe there was some problem then.

Anyways. I am interested in developing hooks and libalpm parallelism.

I have been looking into the links you provided. Looks good. Do you think this could be a summer long project ?

Also if Arch does want to participate as a GSOC project, we gotta set up an ideas page with a mentor list. I'm going to wait and see if Arch gets selected.

And if that doesn't pan out, I can always just contribute over time.

Re: Google Summer of Code 2014

Hello, Arch Women would like to try and help get this some traction. We have a wiki page here for ideas: https://archwomen.org/wiki/projects:internships:ideas

To do GSoC you need a few project ideas, mentors and an application I believe. We have a meeting scheduled Sun. Aug. 10th at 7pm EDT/11pm UTC in #archlinux-women if people are interested in planning/mentoring/contributing in some way. Please pass on the word, thanks!
