My monitor is not primary

Some (quite) recent updates has confused X.. When I'm booting, it doesn't set any monitor as primary.
When I boot my laptop without any monitors attached, xrandr shows that LVDS1 isn't set as primary.
When booting with two monitors attached (and thus no LVDS1), neither VGA1 or HDMI1 is primary.

I have to manually set which monitor should be primary and reload i3.
I cannot just set LVDS1 to be primary as I often boot with two monitors, and I cannot set one of the other monitors as primary as I often only has LVDS1..

Any idea what the problem might be or how I can fix this?
