Why do you want to start X as root?
Any errors?

Re: gnome not starting in root account[SOLVED]

Do you have an .xinitrc file in your /root directory? If not, then you're using /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc when running 'startx' as root, which starts twm and 3 xterm terminals and not gnome or any other DE.

I was under the impression that running X as root was unadvisable, is that not true?

Running as root is always unadvisable unless you need it for system maintenance

You shouldn't ever need X for system maintenance. And yes, it is a bad idea™
