[SOLVED] grub showing nothing :-/

Hi everyone,

I've just made a *huge* update on a system, a quite old laptop : it was still the update requiring to ignore filesystem and bash first, in order to move things from /bin to /usr/bin etc... remember ? :-)

had to clean some packages, remove some legacy sysvinit things (was already using systemd... but not sure if was not set in a kind of compat mode)

then I also updated ths mkinicpio hooks, to remove warnings about [pata] etc being deprecated, I put [block] instead.

then...
(I did a backup :-) )
then I tried to reboot.

Now : grub doesn't show anything but the "minimal console line".

whereas, it should show :
- a windows partition boot
- the two arch lines (default and failsafe).

Any idea how I could at least boot something ?

linux resides on hd(0,6)

Any advice greatly welcome !

This was a common complaint at the time grub (now legacy) was replaced by grub2 (now grub). I don't remember the fix, but there was a heap of threads about it.

Not a Sysadmin issue, moving to NC...

Thanks for the move,
I already did a fast search but didn't find the equivalent problem.
I only found a 'recovery method' when going from grub to grub2, provided I did a backup, which of course i did not do. Great.

Some more info, obtained when on the grub prompt :

root is set to hd0,6
hitting 'boot' tells me a kernel must be loaded first.

- using the good old
root (hd0,0)   
makeactive
chainloader+1
boot

allowed me to boot the windows partition. (I rediscovered a vista never booted for 2 years, restoring its state from sleep ! ), could be useful to wipe the mbr clean.

any insight on this would be greatly appreciated

Can you just nuke /boot/grub and install grub (now grub2) following the wiki?

Kernel panic, unable to mount system fs ...

I obtained this afte trying to force the kernel :

kernel /boot/vmiluz-whatever-was-there
boot

not a good news, is it ?

I guess I'll be looking for a live cd soon

You may be able to load your grub menu from the minimal grub prompt with

configfile /boot/grub/menu.lst.pacsave

From there you can boot as usual, then fix your boot loader. grub legacy is in the AUR if you want to stick with that.

@WorMzy : I love you soooo much :-)

configfile did the trick indeed.

I really thougt the kernel itself was in cause. Now that I've boot, i'll see the grub / grub legacy options.
