Hi,
I have an older T22 Thinkpad. I installed 0.7.1, and upgraded xorg from testing. I've rerun xorgconfig, and identified the savage driver, and limited the configuration to the 8mb of RAM on the laptop.
When I startx, using TWM, I can get windows to appear, and I can run some basic applications. When I run KDE, it goes through the initialization, then the screen goes black, and I have a cursor on the desktop. Nothing else.
Gnome stops on the initialization screen.
I've checked the xorg.0.log, and there is one error about not being able to address a non-exisitant TTY0. I checked the logs on my PCs that are functioning well, and this seems to come up in all my logs, so I haven't worried about that.
The only other note is from the savage drivers about not loading drx (which I have left commented out; my board doesn't have enough memory).
I've set some pretty basic horizontal and vertical refresh rates. I've also tried the plain jane VGA drivers but those don't work at all.
I've booted to Knoppix (didn't check the x configuration, hmmm), and KDE runs ok with that.
I've also googled "T22 xorg" and haven't discovered much of any use.
Can one of the wizars perhaps offer me some additional advice or additional debugging tips? I'd sure appreciate it!

FYI, wmaker seems also to work pretty well. Just a problem with rendering on KDE and gnome...

Some folks were kind enough to send me copies of the xorg config files. I reinstalled and re-ran xorgconifg and made sure that I had no more than 1024x768 as a resoultion and things are OK.
I thought I'd tried that before, but perhaps not.
At any rate, thx for those who considered my question.

vesa does not provide direct rendering. if you want it, then you need the proper savage driver.

What do you mean by that? Does part of the image shift off the screen no matter you adjust the monitor, or somesuch? Does X hang up and give you a blank screen?

with the vesa driver (no dri configuration in xorg.conf) the size of screen is ok but when i move a window lokks very bad, with the dri option and vesa driver in xorg.cong i have no problem everithing lokks y fells good
with the savage driver i get a wrong screnn size (more litle the image than the real screnn size) and with the dri option enabled in the xorg.conf the screnn goes black, and i need to restart with a live-cd and fix the problem...maybe vesa with dri dont work but for me works and my system looks nice..

I am using the savage drivers now on this T22. No dri module, screen depth 24 at 1024x768 resolution. This seems to work very well for me.

If you get screen size problems try putting

This is the xorg.conf I'm using on this T22. I *believe* I generated this using xorgconfig. I've snipped some of the stuff that I thought was irrelevant (input, paths and such). I tried to leave the things that were related to the monitor and video card.

The DRI section should be uncommented if you want DRI as a normal user.
(BTW, have either of you tried using 'X -configure'? That specifies a lot more modules to be loaded, and seems to autodetect a lot of stuff.)
