[Solved] Steam Displaying Oddly on All Workspaces (Openbox)

Recently I've had Steam behave oddly on all non-steam workspaces. I have it on workspace one, but it is showing through other applications. If I scroll over to the browser workspace, steam will display the main steam window through firefox window, or through various other applications (such as a file browser). It does this almost 100% of the time, and it only started happening recently, but I don't recall any large changes. It does not do this on any other WM/DE that I have tried either (Gnome, Fluxbox, Cinnamon, etc). It seems it may be an issue with Openbox exclusively.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Or even pointing into the direction of the issue so I can do my own research. But I'm at a loss currently as to what I can look for.

Welcome to the newest nvidia update.
If you search thre forum for something along the lines of “applications persist on workspaces/desktops“ you'll find a few things.

I can't quite find anything related to this exactly. Maybe I will need to roll back the driver? But I fear that will just cause some dependency problems and a lot of hassle.

Edit: I'm not sure if it was clear before, but it does not happen (as far as I can tell) when the Steam window is minimized. Just in case, the current nvidia driver I have is 331.38-1

In case of downgrading you also need to downgrade xorg-server to 1.14, but you need to rebuild the package (plus its xorg-dependencies) because of some library that was so-bumped when 1.15 was packaged (I can't remember which from the top of by head). I'm running a downgraded nvidia+xorg-server while waiting for a fix to be released.

I looked into all the dependencies associated with it and it's overwhelming. I feel there will be lots of breakage if I roll it back. What nvidia/xorg-server do you currently have?

xorg-server 1.14.5-2 (including xorg-server-common and xorg-server-xephyr) and nvidia 331.20-4 (including related packages + lib32). xf86-input-evdev was also downgraded to 2.8.2-1. From my pacman.log this seems to be the only packages I downgraded, this was on the 14th last month. I don't know if there's been any other upgrades recently which might cause breakage, as I haven't touched pacman since.

I quote myself from the bspwm issue list.

one 'workaround' is to use a compositor (e.g. compton, xcompmgr etc.) I think it's nvidias fault, seems to happen with different wm's not just bspwm.

I'm using compton. Whithout compton running i have the same problems.

Awesome, thanks! I just enabled compton, and immediately it looks like things are working as normal again. This is such an odd issue. I hope nvidia fixes this soon. I'm really glad that I did not roll back anything, however. That would have been a tedious process. Thanks for the advice!

Edit: I'll mark this as solved after an hour or so, just to make sure it doesn't sneak back up and bite me.
