Hello everyone,
Yesterday I built a new PC, but I can't get it to work well. Whenever it's been running for 5-45 minutes, the screen suddenly doesn't detect a signal from the video card, and the fans go crazy for some reason. The PC itself still 'works', because I managed to echo something to a file, but the only real optiom at that point is to shut it down. If I then immediately start it up, it often gives me one long and three short beeps, and the monitor still doesn't work. If I wait for a bit and try again, everything seems normal until the same thing happens again.
Relevant hardware:
- Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 MoBo
- NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Ti
- CM 600W PSU
Things I've already done/tried:
- Checked the internet for mobo beep codes, but got conflicting data, and the mobo site doesn't help much. I know it's an AMI BIOS, though.
- Reinserted video card, RAM.
- Set iommu=soft parameter in kernel so USB devices work.
- Tried a different OS (Windows) and even Memtest86+, and the same problem occurs there.
- Tried running the PC with one of the two RAM sticks to see if either was broken.
- Checked dmesg. There's nothing. It just thinks everything is alright.
Now this seems like a possibly broken video card kind of situation, but I'm not sure, especially with stuff working for a short while and then everything going crazy. Is there anything else I could try? Or should I just return the video card and/or mobo?
Thanks,
boXd
Edit: OK, I decided to try a few more times. The fans don't spin quite so loudly when it happens now (possibly because I checked all connections?) and I didn't get the beeping on reboot, but the problem still persist through boot, only going away when waiting a few minutes with the PC off.

Fans going crazy usually indicates a significant rising in temperature.
Not trying to discourage you, but your new mobo doesn't get te best reviews in that matter.

Since I've only got the parts since Friday, I can probably still get a refund. Woulf you recommend that I get another mobo? Would an Asrock 990FX Extreme3 be a better choice? I'm having trouble finding out which mobos *are* good.

If you google for reviews for your mobo you will get a better picture in how it compares to others with the same specifics.
A *good* mobo is a personal thing. It depends on wat you are looking for. Do you want a stable mobo, or do you want something that can be overclocked into extremes?
Do you game a lot? Do you use programs which require a lot of cpu-power or memory-consumption?
These are all questions you have to have a clear answer to in advance.
If you have your specifics set, then google is your best friend. There are lots of hardware-review sites which cover about every mobo on the market. Just take the time to look around.
