How to keep nvidia 319.32 on my system

Because nouveau does not work with my video card (GeForce 8600 GT) and nvidia newer versions fail to work here I'm forced to withhold several packages: nvidia 319.32, nvidia-utils 319.32, and linux. This worked for a while but now some lib dependencies make it impossible to -Syu anymore. My questions is, how should I proceed? I thought I could use nvidia-dkms 319.32 and this way I could upgrade the kernel, but what should I do with nvidia-utils? Should I use the ABS and compile it myself?
I know I need a workaround until upstream fixes the problems, which could take a while.

Re: How to keep nvidia 319.32 on my system

Can you install the current linux and linux-headers packages, then manually build nvidia-utils and nvidia from ABS?

Re: How to keep nvidia 319.32 on my system

nvidia-utils is all blobs, there is nothing to compile there. Which lib dependencies exactly are a problem? I'm not aware of any. There was a libgcrypt soname bump, but xorg-server-1.14.5-2 took care of that.

So xorg-server wants to replace nvidia-utils but the old nvidia package still needs it. Should I force it?

Re: How to keep nvidia 319.32 on my system

You need to add xorg-server to IgnorePkg. You *need* 1.14.5-2 and no other version.

Re: How to keep nvidia 319.32 on my system

Well, first, you have xorg-server-1.15, but I told you which version you need. Second, the log shows your nvidia-utils is at 331.38, which is also wrong.

You have quite the mess on your system.

I tried this now, but I also had to IgnorePkg xf86-input-evdev and xf86-video-vesa. Sorry I simply don't dare to -Syu anymore I feel this goes out of hand. But this way I'm unable to install any new programs. This partition will be actually wiped soon, the thing is, I'm actually freshly installing archlinux onto a LUKS partition, but have no working display driver now sad

Yes, yes, sorry the xorg log is from a new install, and we were talking about the old one.

I just posted the log to show what my problem is with the new driver.

Re: How to keep nvidia 319.32 on my system

Bah, you replied while I was editing my post. The thing is this: if you want to use 319.32 your X needs to be at 1.14.5-2 and your nvidia kernel module version needs to match the nvidia-utils version.

As for the problem with the new driver... I suggest posting at the nvidia forums: https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/board/98/linux/ <- read the sticky and provide the information it asks for.

Re: How to keep nvidia 319.32 on my system

There is one thing I don't understand: on my old system -Syu wants to remove nvidia-utils, but the new fresh install does contain nvidia-utils-331.38-1. Why?

Maybe someone knows what the problem is, my google-fu did not reveal anything useful for me sad

Add "nvidia" to the module section in your /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and rebuild the kernel image. That should solve this problem.

Can you install the current linux and linux-headers packages, then manually build nvidia-utils and nvidia from ABS?

I'm trying to find nvidia 319.32 here: https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … ges/nvidia
Is there an easier way to go back to a previous version of a package?

Maybe you should give the 304 series a try. It's even available in the official repos.

That works, but it's even slower than the nv driver.

Re: How to keep nvidia 319.32 on my system

If you really need 319.32, then this is the way to go I think:
Use the xorg114 repository provided by the catalyst maintainers https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … positories
Take the nvidia pkgbuild for 319.32 from the git log and build it (you'll have to create your own patch for the current kernel version, though)
https://projects.archlinux.org/svntogit … ges/nvidia

I find that extremely hard to believe. There haven't been that much differences between 304 and 319. And I doubt they affect such old GPUs as yours anyway.

I have tested it. Supertuxkart would barely move one frame every second with nvida-304, while on nv is't almost playable.

Maybe the new ARM can help here. You can get older packages from there, or you can even use it to set your mirror to a fixed day, i.e. a date before things broke for you, using something like

Server = http://seblu.net/a/arm/2014/01/20/$repo/os/$arch

in your /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. That way you can still install packages. You won't get security fixes, though, so better use it only temporarily that way.

Did you check logs that 3d acceleration is actually working?

Sorry. Your Xorg.log looked exactly as mine as I got nearly the same error. It was a try.

Thanks. Nice, I forgot about ARM since the original was closed. But on the other hand I rather would like to get the source package of nvidia and compile it with the up-to-date system.

Thank you for insisting on this, I had to check it again, and of course you were right, 3D acceleration was turned off in KDE. Now it works great. It feels a little bit slower than the old system, but that could be just a subjective opinion. Thanks again.

Still I'll try to compile the nvidia package just to see whether that is faster smile

I'll mark the thread SOLVED then.
