Gnome 3 activating network locks up system

Hi,

I updated my system on Wednesday evening with no problems and traveled by train Thursday and had no issues turning wi-fi on and off, watching, movies, etc. Now I turn my laptop on and a) it's in airplane mode and b) if I try to turn wireless back on or turn off airplane mode, the machine locks up (no keyboard ability, no mouse). The screen either goes all blue, all white, or all black.

Any ideas of where I should look for assistance? Also, for the sake of troubleshooting, I have no access to a wired connection where I am at - ONLY wireless.

Thank you in advance.

Czar.

System: HP G42-475DX, 4GB memory, Phenom II 2.9 GHz, xf86-video-ati...up to this point, this system has been flawless. Not sure what's going on now.

Re: Gnome 3 activating network locks up system

Update: logging in as root (terrible thing to, I know...forgive me) allows me to turn off the airplane mode and turn on wireless with no issues.

Logging in as root is perfectly legitimate for system maintenance; just don't use it for general use.  Other distros enforce this by not allowing root login, but not Arch

Re: Gnome 3 activating network locks up system

Hi,

I have similar problem (airplane mode is on, WiFi is off) and even if I log into Gnome with root account, I can't disable airplane mode and enable WiFi. System does not freeze or hang, but airplane mode just can't be turned off.
This is new clean net-install on my old laptop HP NC6120.
One more thing... WiFi worked normally for few hours (net-install used WiFi for installation and later on I used WiFi to install gnome and other packages)... I even use it for about 30min inside Gnome but then it suddenly stop working. I thought that disable/enable might help, but after disabling it airplane mode turned on.

So... what am I doing wrong?

Edit: OK, solved... "rfkill unblock all" disable airplane mode successfully.

Re: Gnome 3 activating network locks up system

Hi

I can use my Wifi when I deactivate airplane mode and use the wifi-menu command. Is there an automated way to deactivate the airplane mode without using a script?

Thanks!

Re: Gnome 3 activating network locks up system

freebymusic,

Welcome to Arch Linux.  I gather you are using netctl, since you are using the wifi-menu command.  I actually created a bug report about this.  As this thread is a bit old, and this question is a little off topic, I am going to go ahead and close this thread.  Please feel free to start a new thread and, if you deem it appropriate, link back to this thread.

Thanks.

Edit2: Morning Jason smile
