linux 3.13 moving to core repo

I have not seen any talk about this in the mailing list. Is there someplace else I can read about it?

Yes. Are major issues keeping it from moving now mainly. 3.13 was released almost a month ago according to kernelnewbie website. I am thinking somethings much be broken by it since it is not in the core repo and wanted to read about the devs conversations.

Re: linux 3.13 moving to core repo

It looks like the issues have been resolved so hopefully we will have the new kernel in the core repo soon!

Re: linux 3.13 moving to core repo

FWIW, I have been using 3.13 since the release candidates (probably around rc3 or rc4) and have not had any problems.  But I would imagine that the keyboard thing is something that they probably really want to ensure is working properly.

Re: linux 3.13 moving to core repo

WonderWoofy, have you noticed any improvements?  I am hoping for improvements with the open source ati driver for my HD6670 graphics card.  It runs pretty well now with dpm enabled at boot through grub customization.

Re: linux 3.13 moving to core repo

From what I understand, the open source ATI driver has been improving by leaps and bounds of late.  But that said, I am an integrated Intel graphics user, so I can't speak to whether it is better or not.  But apparently there has been the addition of the multi-queue  block layer in 3.13 as well.  So that has the potential to eventually make things faster when userspace stuff starts to take advantage of it.

I actually use the RC kernels because I am a btrfs user who reads the linux-btrfs mailing list.  So I see these improvements and can't quite help myself.  So I use the mainline kernel as well as the btrfs-progs from David Serba's integration branch (unstable).

Not to derail the thread, but I've seen you mention this before. That sounds like a lot of extra maintenence dude. Does it take a lot more time to keep your system up to date?

Re: linux 3.13 moving to core repo

Compiling the btrfs-progs is quick, so I keep that more up to date than the kernel actually.  The kernel I update when I see something interesting has been committed.  The mainline RSS feed is included in my newsbeuter urls, but since I read linux-btrfs I also see when Chris Mason requests a git pull from Linus.

So I really don't spend that much time maintaining my system.  I see the additions included in the things I would be reading anyway, and I compile when I think it is interesting.  If I didn't enjoy learning about this kind of stuff I wouldn't do it.  So this isn't for everyone, nor have I ever tried to imply that all btrfs users should do this.  But if you are a btrfs user, you should at least be using the latest stable kernel, which is pretty easy to do in Arch Linux.  I also keep that kernel installed on my system as a backup.

Re: linux 3.13 moving to core repo

any news on new kernel coming out  ? its already 3.13.4 and no progress ? also no new nvidia driver as well. Also if the new kernel is not working as excepted how come then the 3.12.9 is not updated to 3.12.12.

I would remind you that everyone here is a volunteer.  It is not reasonable to expect anything. An occasional "Thank You" would be appreciated.

The general answer is that when it is ready, it will be released.

You could potentially look at arch-dev-public where this information is likely to be....    And there is a thread posted 12 hours before this...
