Acroread 7.0 Font Puzzler

I am running Arch 0.7.1, and have acroread 7.0 installed, direct from the Arch repository. I recently tried to use it to view a flight change schedule that Air Canada had sent me in PDF format. acroread popped up a dialog saying "Cannot find or create the font Verdana. Some characters may not display or print properly". The resultant page had no proper characters at all except for the Air Canada logo. All other character positions were represented by small round circles.

Now for the puzzler. Verdana *is* on my system, and a quick check with Abiword shows that it is visible to my GUI apps. BTW, it is in a subdirectory of /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts, exactly where it should be, and /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts is represented in both /etc/X11/xorg.conf and /etc/fonts/fonts.conf. I even went as far as to check the font.dir file in the directory it is in, to be sure that the directory shows the name "Verdana". It does. Even more interesting, good ol xpdf will display the flight change schedule just fine!

Does anyone have any idea whats up here?

Can you open it using xpdf?

try "xpdf filename" from a terminal window.
