GNU/Linux news sites?

Where are you getting your GNU/Linux news from? I'm already reading LWN and Slashdot. I try to avoid Phoronix because it's a poorly written tabloid (a quote from a recent article that I saw there: "At this point in the Linux enthusiast stage, quantity does equal over quantity does survive if you want to survive." Uhhh....what?). Are there any other worthwhile sites since The H shut down?

Re: GNU/Linux news sites?

Thanks, but I should have specified "recent/up-to-date" recommendations. Many of those are really out-dated and or no longer exist.

edit: but anyway, tuxmachines.org looks reasonable.

Tuxmachines has some points back to phoronix, oh well.  Tuxmachines looks interesting anyway.

Re: GNU/Linux news sites?

I am after ideas as well. Phoronix makes my skin crawl, and my usual goto sites, tuxmachines and lxer, have far too many links to it. Tuxmachines isn't too bad, but the sister site techrights requires a bit too much of a tin foil hat. Linuxtoday is okay as an aggregator, not great. I can't believe phoronix is the best we can do, but unfortunately, professional-grade writing requires real money, and that is hard to achieve in the free-as-in-beer crowd. (I plead guilty.)

Don't forget that the guy that runs phoronix likes to drink a few beers every so often, that sentence was most probably written after he had a few tongue

He also likes to toot his own horn, which gets on my nerves. "I wrote x number of articles all by myself..." "I was the first to report this..." "I work tirelessly...". Fair enough, if you read between the opinionated crap that he posts day on day, there's some pretty decent articles, and kudos to him for spending so much of his time writing it all up, I could just do without him stroking his ego all over the place.

A couple of news sites I visit:

This imagery is disturbing.

I recommend a paid LWN account. The news are okay, but being able to fight with all those grade A geeks is worth the money.

Re: GNU/Linux news sites?

Be careful as to not turn this into a Phoronix bashing thread. It's an important site as the developers of a lot of the stuff that Michael Larabel reports on come in to answer questions. Yes, the site is chaotic and *everyone* is aware of it. But, beyond the troll-fest there is good stuff happening there.

**EDIT**

Another major benefit of Phoronix is that lots of users are willing to test code for hardware driver developers. A whole bunch of people will test almost any patch from developers if it means higher performance, particularly with GPU drivers. This means higher quality, more performant code gets to the rest of us.

Re: GNU/Linux news sites?

Linux Today looks like a great resource, but what's up with the archived articles? Many month listings time out, and the ones I can reach only provide links for the last 10 or so days of articles. ? hmm ?

Re: GNU/Linux news sites?

It seems I am one of the few who likes to read Phoronix eventually. Well...

You should definitely keep up with (at least) /r/linux, /r/archlinux and /r/linux_gaming on Reddit. Actually, /r/archlinux has more NC-like questions than news, but the other subreddits usually have some popular ones.

The websites aren't necessarily the same but they have the same headlines that are probably pointing to the same news articles (most likely from phoronix).

Re: GNU/Linux news sites?

They are essentially newsreaders, with short excerpts from the articles followed by a link to the full article on the original website. (not just phoronix!)

Linux Today makes it clear that the articles have come from other sites by putting the hosters name in bold, Tux Machines doesn't seem mention the original hoster at all, which I feel is a bit misleading..

Re: GNU/Linux news sites?

I guess it would be redundant for something like distrowatch to display every time that Arch releases a whole new slew of packages every day and how Arch feels like a brand new OS with every time it does that.  (Distro) has announced it's new release today, and in other news, Arch has released a whole new slew of packages again today just like everyday making it feel like a new release.

I don’t understand French, but through Google Translate I find LinuxFr tends to have neat reports, interviews, and other unique content.
