(if this is the wrong section please move it, thanks in advance)

i'm looking for a tool just like Total Commander (in windows) or Krusader (in KDE) but for gnome
of course Krusader runs in Gnome, but I wan't to avoid using the qt engine, and I'm trying to avoid using kde software in general
there is emelfm2 but it is not that good... any suggestions?

Re: something like Krusader for gnome???

You could try gentoo (pacman -S gentoo). There's also xfe in AUR that can be configured to a two-panel view.

You could try emelfm2 (gtk2) or emelfm (gtk). Both are in repo

Re: something like Krusader for gnome???

Krusader is great just because it uses KDE's VFS, which is ages ahead of Gnome's VFS... so I'm afraid you won't find something close to that for Gnome. So far, TuxCommander is the closest relative.
Of course not everything is good about krusader- for example I have pretty frequent crashes with it, even with the most current svn (which I'm building every week). Most of the times the crashes are QT-related.
Total Commander works great under wine, but well, it's still a windows app: no permissions, no soft/hard links, no UTF-8 support (since its emuleted under a win9X environment), some addons which require a dos shell won't work... but for simple filemanagement tasks it is very handy!  wink

You could also try XNC (X Northern Commander).

amen to all that. In fact, once they (or qt) fix the frequent crashes, which are quite annoying, to say the least, I find Krusader one of the good reasons to use KDE :-) (apart from the "hey! I can do THAT too!" experiences I have almost daily)
And Total Commander is still the best file manager there is - in the end, it was the one program that kept me in Windows for as long as I did.

Re: something like Krusader for gnome???

IMO, the best file manager for Windows is Servant Salamander 2.5 beta 10a. smile
It misses some of Total Commander's functionality, but already has some features that blows TC away. And it is much stable and designed much better than TC.
I hope that Krusader will become even better than SS after few releases! smile
It is sad that MC still has many bugs and misses many functions. It is sad that MC is not as comfortable in work as FAR. sad

Re: something like Krusader for gnome???

i agree that krusader is one good reason to use kde
but now i have tuxcmd, it is exactly what I wanted

XNC is good, but like all the others i tries to add a lot stuff (buttons etc etc)
total commander is TOP for a specific reason, its simple!
two-panels but simple (and I really love the rightclick selection sometimes)
up to now only tuxcmd and krusader are simple
gentoo is nice, but it has a million buttons at the bottom! I only wan't rename,copy/move smile (linked to an Fkey)

but i'll give SS a shot before I leave windows tongue

I think that tuxcmd really sucks. I find the command-line better. wink

Re: something like Krusader for gnome???

Midnight Commander is simply indispensable, for various reasons- the main one being it is a CONSOLE filemanager, not needing X to be loaded...
Agreed that under Windoze FAR (also a console filemanager) is more flexible/pluggable, but that does not mean much...

Re: something like Krusader for gnome???

command line is one thing and X is another
i never used a file manager in command line (starting from dos5)
i was typing everything I wanted to do

but when I'm sorting 2gb of mp3s i need a graphics commander (total commander)
after all, your mouse pointer exists in 2 dimension, console no tongue
you select, open, close and xmms is some pixels away (not some alt+tabs etc)
it always depends what you want to do so as to choose the right software
