Video driver issues after updating

Hi,

After updating my laptop (Lenovo Y500) yesterday, the nouveau driver doesn't seem to load properly (I'm stuck in tty1). When I try to run startx, it says 'no screens found'. I don't have a xorg.conf file, and when I try to generate one using Xorg :0 -configure, it says 'number of created screens does not match number of detected devices' and 'server terminated with error (2)'. No xorg.conf.new is generated...

Kernel: 3.13-5-1-ARCH
Graphics card: GeForce GT 650M

I've always used the nouveau driver (installing the nvidia driver results in an overheated laptop within 5 seconds after booting it). Installing xf86-video-vesa does help (I can login using SLiM), but this is of course only a temporary solution. Any ideas what to try next?

Re: Video driver issues after updating

See https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nv … IA_Optimus and recent threads with the same error messages.
Maybe you need to use

Option "AutoAddDevices" "False"

Re: Video driver issues after updating

Hmm, in /var/log/Xorg.0.log it says '(EE) [drm] KMS not enabled', even though I added nouveau to the MODULES array in /etc/mkinitcpio.conf (and ran mkinitcpio -p linux). What's going on?

Also, how do I create a proper xorg.conf without Xorg :0 -configure?

Re: Video driver issues after updating

What's the output of

lspci | grep VGA

Is there anything interesting in dmesg / systemd's journal?

Re: Video driver issues after updating

Output of lspci | grep VGA is

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 650M] (rev a1)

I added some dmesg output to my previous post.

Any other ideas? I'd rather not re-install my entire system smile

One thing we haven't asked here is what packages were updated.

Please edit your post.
When posting configs, code or command output, please use [ code ] tags, not [ quote ] tags https://bbs.archlinux.org/help.php#bbcode

like this

It makes the code more readable and - in case of longer listings - more convenient to scroll through.

Re: Video driver issues after updating

Would it be safe to run

pacman -U linux-3.12.9-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz linux-firmware-20140123.418320b-1-any.pkg.tar.xz

directly from my system (so not from a Live CD/USB)?

Definitely worth downgrading the kernel to see if that is the fault.

It is — after downgrading the kernel things are back to normal.
