AA fonts look blurry in Firefox?

I decided to dump the xorg-fonts-75dpi and xorg-fonts-100dpi packages so that Firefox could use antialiasing... But it appears that Gnome does not implement the same antialiasing options as KDE, neither in the case of "Best Shapes" nor "Best Contrast". Here, I'll show you...

Don't the fonts in the Firefox window in this screeny look a bit too blurry?

It's very strange, though, the fonts only seem excessively blured in Firefox. I can't see why this would be, after all antialiasing is done by the X server... :?

Or could the problem be that I'm using a Trinitron CRT monitor, as opposed to an LCD?

Yes, they all look a bit fuzzy, especially the bold fonts.  They just aren't as sharp and crisp as they should be, in my opinion.

Hmmm...they look fine to me as well.  I see what you mean that the bold fonts are slightly blurry, but not extreme IMO.

Re: AA fonts look blurry in Firefox?

Could you post /etc/fonts/local.conf?

Also, do you have freetype enabled in firefox about:config?

You fonts look sharper, keevn7.  The outer edges don't look as fuzzy as those in Gullible's screenie.  At least that's the way it looks from my point of view.  Gullible's fonts aren't really bad, either, just a bit fuzzy in places.

Re: AA fonts look blurry in Firefox?

/etc/fonts/local.conf:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<!-- /etc/fonts/local.conf file for local customizations -->
<fontconfig>

<!--
Use the Auto-Hinter
        <match target="pattern">
                <edit name="autohint" mode="assign">
                        <bool>true</bool>
                </edit>
        </match>
-->

<!--
Disable anti-aliasing for fonts that are size <=12
        <match target="pattern">
                <test qual="any" name="size" compare="less_eq">
                        <int>12</int>
                </test>
                <edit name="antialias" mode="assign"><bool>false</bool></edit>
        </match>
-->

<!--
Enable sub-pixel rendering
        <match target="font">
                <test qual="all" name="rgba">
                        <const>unknown</const>
                </test>
                <edit name="rgba" mode="assign"><const>rgb</const></edit>
        </match>
-->
</fontconfig>

I just enabled AA using Gnome, though (Menu: Desktop -> Preferences -> Font, select "Best Contrast" or "Best Shapes" - they look exactly the same to me).

But no, I didn't have Freetype enabled in Firefox.

Re: AA fonts look blurry in Firefox?

In about:config:

font.FreeType2.enable -> true
font.FreeType2.autohinted -> false
font.FreeType2.unhinted -> false

Then I increased the hinting in my Gnome font configuration.
