Hello. I am a newbie to Linux...using Ubuntu 12.04 for a couple of months. I have a SoundBlaster Live Platinum card with an Live drive that allows me to input sound through AUX2. The sound is coming out the speakers, but I cannot record from it as the CAPTURE source. Does anyone know how to change this. The F1 help does not discuss ALSA mixer, but addresses using Terminal (Gnome). I'm guessing there may be a magic keystroke combo to change the capture source to whatever device is currently selecting, but nothing has worked for me yet. Maybe it's a terminal command. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried using F4 to change 'Capture' settings?
In the top left I have (3rd line from the top):
View: F3:[Playback] F4: Capture F5: All
When I press F4, it changes to
View: F3:[Playback] F4: Capture F5: All

That changes the display to show the Capture channels and which ones are set to CAPTURE from. However, I cannot find a way to actually cancel CAPTURE from Aux and turn on CAPTURE from Aux2. I know that Aux2 is the right device because if I turn down the volume in the Playback channels (F3) the volume will go down.
Have you had success in changing the CAPTURE devices?
Thanks for your interest.

I have a very basic card and I have only AUX, no AUX2:
$ amixer | grep -i aux
Simple mixer control 'Aux',0

Alsamixer generally uses the space bar to toggle

Thank you Skunktrader. I see how that turns the Capture flag off and on. However, the display has to show a series of dashes (--------) beneath the volume bar to be able to set the Capture flag. Apparently, Alsamixer needs some other action (probably a terminal command or script) to set up that dashed status. That may be worth a separate thread to draw attention to it by more people not wishing to read through a thread of messages.
