This might be a stupid question, but I can't find an answer. I apologize if the answer is starring me in the face.

I am trying to install Arch on my new rMBP 11,2. I can't get the wireless to work.

When I try to install broadcom-wl-dkms I get an error that dkms is a dependency that is missing. And when I try to install broadcom-wl I get that linux is an unmet dependency.

What am I doing wrong?

Does `pacman -Ss dkms` show that community/dkms is installed?

Nope, it does not.

Hold on a second, do I first have to install the system and after that to get the wireless working? ( first time using archboot).

LE: I apologize if I'm not making any sense right now, I spent the last 3 hours trying wireless adapters and USB modems. I am starting to go crazy.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

A question about installing rEFInd.

I installed rEFInd from OS X, booted from the Arch USB stick, installed Arch. Do I also have to install rEFInd in Arch? If not, how do I parse kernel parameters to the bootloader?

You should'nt need to install the system first, however to get it working permanently you have to reinstall it once you're inside the system after reboot. If you do not want to use rEFIt/rEFind I would recommend installing grub and using the native bootloader, it's really simple and you pass kernel parameters inside "/etc/default/grub" smile

To be able to install dkms and the wireless you need to have linux-headers, dkms, and a few other dependencies, check which ones they are before you try installing dkms and the wifi driver. Something I discovered recently is that you can use your Android phone with USB as your wifi-device. This does not require anything special to be installed, simply run "dhcpcd" when you've connected the droid and it should work. (perhaps it's "dhcpcd <droid-wifi-id>")

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

I do want to use rEFind. I don't like th idea of having to pres Alt to boot into Arch. But I have to figure out how to set it up.

Does anybody have a hidden-in-the-deep--parts-of-the-internet guide that clearly explains it?

LE: Ok, so as far as I understand, refind boots Arch by searching in its /boot directory for images/refind.conf files.

I installed the system as simple as I could(EFI partition from Mac, OS X, Recovery OS X, and I made the  /  and /home). I went into /boot and put in there a refind.conf alongside the images that were already there.

Refind does recognize I have some linux installed, I click enter and drive not found. Did I miss something or understood something wrong?

::Triggering uevents...
Waiting 10 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-uuid/XXX ...
ERROR: device XXX not found. Skiping fsck.
ERROR: Unable to find root device XXX/
You are being dropped to a recovery shell

LE: Wrong image. Copied the drivers folder from the refind bin file to the EFI directory in OS x, restarted and ArchLinux now boots.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

Yeah, the bootloader part is kind of confusing. There are tons of How-to's out there but I have a feeling that most of them are outdated?

I found this:
http://bababadalgharaghtakamminarronnko … etina.html

It seems there is no bootloader needed at all. Just install rEFInd in OSx and enable "scan_all_linux_kernels" in refind.conf.  I *think* this is because the EFISTUB option is enabled in newer kernels and no files have to be copied at all. Would be nice if someone could shed some light into this. The wiki is not clear, there are several Macbook articles with several links leading to other links with different answers.

You don't need to with the guide on the wiki: Macbook11,x. To boot into OS X you need to press Alt.

Wait, empty empty; or nothing related to unknown keys empty?

If it is empty empty, try again as root.

for boot loader, I recommend Gummiboot. It uses "native" UI so the text of OS list menu didn't look too small like grub.

hey, so 5GHz works for me with work cisco, however my laptop does not seem to be able to see my 5GHz from my airport extreme at home

anyone have any ideas?

(also everywhere (iwconfig...) my adapter is listed as 802.11abg, but i guarantee it's using n, so that's weird)

just fyi in grub.cfg you can use "set gfxmode=2880x1800" or "set gfxmode=1440x900" or whatever to adjust the size for readable text...

i have not installed anything, just left it to the default controller which seems to work quite well:
- for my normal usage (terminals / chromium without flash / hardware decoded video) the fans are always at their minimum inaudible 2000rpm, the core temp is at 40C, which is not feelable on the bottom of the chassis
- for my high usage situations (multicore compiling / steam gaming / google-chrome using flash) the temp sits in the mid 90C with fans at 5000rpm (max is 6k) which is audible but fine when doing those types of tasks

If I run "stress" on a base arch install my cpu hits over 100c, with fan sitting at 1200rpm.. hmm

Hm, so when playing videos in VLC with VAAPI it shouldn't get hot? 11,2 here.

1080p with DTS audio gets me to about 70 degrees.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

Has anyone tried replacing the Broadcom wireless card with an Intel Wireless-AC 7260? The wireless card seems to be one of the very few user-replaceable components (see http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/MacBook+ … own/18696).

i would guess that you have not installed libva-intel-driver and thus vlc is falling back to software rather than actually using va-api (have you inspected the output of vainfo?)

i have a 11,2: playing iMAX 1920x1080p, 13000 kb/s h.264 video, 1536 kbs/ 5.1 dts audio, mkv

mpv -vo=opengl -hwdec=no = 61% cpu usage | fans stay at min (2000rpm) | temp is 59C (played video for 30mins)
mpv -vo=opengl -hwdec=vaapi = 3.4% cpu usage | fans stay at min (2000rpm) | temp is 40C (room temp is 26C)

is the applesmc module loaded for you? lsmod | grep applesmc

make sure /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan1_manual is set to 0
you can manually set the fan speed for now untill you fix the problem, try googling appesmc fan speed

(i never installed anything and fans worked for me out of the box with a fresh archlinux install)
i used stress -c 8: before temp was ~39C fans at min (2000rpm)
0:50 fans stayed at min for 50seconds until temperatures hit 90C
2:00 over the next minute fans got to 3500rpm temp is at 96C
3:00 over the next minute fans got to 4800rpm and temp is still ~95C
4:00 i started 1080p video without hwdec to give igpu some work
5:00 video is playing fine along with stress, temp is ~95C fans are 5100rpm
10:00 no change from 5mins, 5100rpm | ~95C
max fan speed is 6150rpm so i guess it could have coped in a hotter environment

I did check vainfo.

I found the problem: it was freaking powertop. I changed some settings from good to bad and bam, no more heating. Awkward since Intel is the one providing powertop.
I still am around 55 degrees when playing a video(with Opera, Dwb, deluge, sublime and a few terminals open)

LE: but now VLC gets a segfault when going to the next item in the playlist.

Re: Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina

All the ones that had Crystal Well or graphics in their name.

I should point out that I am still testing everything. Right now I'm at 52 degrees with mvp, Opera, dwb, 4 terminals, Sublime and Deluge open. I think VLC has some issues.

The idea to switch them to the bad setting came to me because yesterday I had some problems with a USB mouse that was getting disconnected every few seconds and connected back again when I was clicking/moving it. I changed the autosuspend USB settings in powertop for that USB port and the mouse worked great.

If anybody has a better idea about why this gets so hot or how to keep the laptop cooler, I am open to suggestions.

LE: With the good settings I get about 4000 wakeups/second. With the bad ones for graphics I get 1500 wakeups/second.

LE2: weird enough, 19 W vs 16 W in power usage. So good settings are actually bad. Can someone confirm this? This feels crazy.

i don't see a noticeable difference between wattage or wakeups/second for good and bad

(i keept the brightness constant, while playing back 1080p and scrolling up&down in chromium)

thanks for that.

Yup applesmc is loaded. /sys/devices/platform/applesmc.768/fan1_manual was set to 1. I set this to "0", ran stress and got the same results as you. So looks like its being controlled by applesmc now.

So I assume I can leave it like that now.

thanks for your help!
