After reading plenty of wonderful things about the radeon opensource drivers I decided to give them another go, but at boot I get terrible screen corruption:
As you can see from the top left, this is still in TTY, and it's like this throughout boot. The pic is when the boot process stops (i.e. X doesn't start, it just freezes there). Even in recovery mode the corruption exists, though the console will work in recovery mode allowing me to restore back to catalyst.
Catalyst is removed per the wiki, and system updated before installing xf86-video-ati (also tested git with the same result). No xorg.conf used for the opensource driver.
Any ideas. Using testing, and hardware is per my sig.
TIA

The radeon.dpm=1 kernel parameter solved a similar issue for me but it was less severe corruption and a different card (6570) but you might get lucky.

Which kernel are you running with it?
A few people have had problems with 3.13 and the radeon driver. but were fine with 3.12 and 3.14-mainline

I'm on 3.13.5 - so that may be it. I can wait for 3.14 - it's not the end of the world since catalyst is working fine here. I'll try the kernel parameter after then next kernel upgrade if it doesn't fix it.
Thank you both.
