I'm still on 3.6.5 using this fine gentleman's heavily-patched kernel: https://github.com/fooblahblah/linux-patched-mbp
However, I was wondering if newer versions of the kernel would run on an 8,2 without any patching necessary?
I think that patch was ultimately included in the 3.8 version of the kernel, so yes, you don't need a patched version of 3.8 on an 8,2.
My problem with the DP was due to using the intel driver and not the ati driver. I think that's because I had to disable KMS for the radeon driver in mkinitcpio in order to boot without the patch you mentioned. Then I hadn't properly configured Xorg to use the radeon driver, so it defaulted to intel.

That's some awesome news, thanks!
3.8 is finally out of testing and I'm interested in trying it out on my 8,2. Is there any special configuration (non-vanilla) to use to get this running well on my 8,2? (grub.cfg, various modules needed to get things working, etc).
Also, anyone using 3.8 yet? How is it compared to previous kernels. Any difference?

Installing now. I'll let y'all know how it goes. However, with 3.8 being out, I'll soon be switching over to UEFI boot, so I'll come back and update with some musings before and after the switch to UEFI.
[Edit 1]: Initial reaction from install (still BIOS boot). This is the best update to happen so far for my rig. Temperatures appear to be 12–20°C lower than they were with 3.7.x, and I'm really excited to see how power holds up, if I get more than a 30 minute increase in average batterylife, I will be absolutely satisfied. I am so excited to reinstall with UEFI (should make my boot much faster and will allow me to finally set my partition scheme up in a way that I like).[/Edit]
All the best,
-HG

I'm installing now as well GRUB2, EFIx64. Apparently I've been using a stock grub.cfg this whole time so I may not need special options there after all.

Wow, I'd be very happy for such a huge temperature drop!
So I upgraded, and upon next boot... kernel panic!
Anyone see this one before? All I did was literally update the kernel via pacman, so I'm not sure what would have changed to give me this error:
"Kernel panic - not syncing: No init found. [...]"

Hi all, this is my first post here. I am running arch in a macbook pro 8.1. So far almost everything is working fine, but I have not been abe to use the built-in microphone with skype. I am pretty certain it has to do with the fact that skype does not have an option for stereo microphone. Facts:
- running only ALSA
- arecord does not record anything, but Audacity (with default settings, (hw:0,0)) does record with stereo channels -- not mono
- mic is shown in amixer:
Simple mixer control 'Mic',0
Capabilities: cvolume
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
Limits: Capture 0 - 3
Front Left: Capture 3 [100%] [30.00dB]
Front Right: Capture 3 [100%] [30.00dB]
anybody got skype working? I rather not have to install pulseaudio...

Hi!
I'm back because i've some time to test a new Arch installation on my mbpro 8,2.
I've seen that new kernel 3.8 brings some fixes and I've installed last Archboot release from USB(easy).
I've used the EFI STUB method and the kernel boots directly from reEFInd.
I tryed to use vga_switcheroo and with IGD options the screen is black but the system works on the background(if i blindy type the command to enable DIS the screen comes back).
How can I manage to get the old way to shut down radeon and use only intel? Or how can I manage to get screen working with boht GPUs?
Thanks!

mleone87 What are the exact steps you followed to create a usb drive to install from? I've tried just about every guide I could find and still cannot boot from usb.

Has anyone encountered the error
libgl cannot load driver i965
This isn't verbatim, I'm trying to get the whole log so in the mean time I'll just try and explain the issue.
I installed via USB drive
Pacstrap, fstab, locale, etc...... normal install
Got wireless working
pacman -S xf86-video-intel xf86-video-ati xorg-server xorg-xinit gnome gdm
Now, when I try to do an xinit or even startx I get no errors in the Xorg.0.log file yet nothing happens.
The backlighting on the keyboard comes on and I can shift to the tty's <7.
When I shift to tty1, back to console, I see the above error.
The video card in the 8,2 uses the i915 chipset so why is it looking for i965?
Should I manually compile mesa?
Is the i965 a separate but relevant chip? If so, what driver does it use?
I feel so close yet so far....
I'll ninja-edit the logs in once I can.
Logs - only able to get dmesg and Xorg.0.log, no .xsession-error or anything is created

hey guys.
i solved the problem with help from tomodachis instructions. im usingn a macbookpro 8.3 late 2011.
the magic thing is the EFI stub boot - that means you boot the kernel directly without help from GRUB2 aso.
Now I can successfully use the ATI card and also use an external display for dual head.
VGA_swicheroo ive not tested but it should work.
Have arch installed and running in efi mode using the opensource radeon driver
copy your actual kernel and initrd from your boot partition to the efi partition [/boot/efi/EFI/arch/]
then copy the refind .iso with dd to an usb stick or install on your mac [i've tested the usb variant]
create a the file /boot/efi/EFI/arch/refind_linux.conf enter this into it: "Boot with sda6" "root=/dev/sda7 add_efi_memmap modprobe.blacklist=i915 radeon.modeset=1 elevator=noop vt.handoff=7 ro
replace the sda* entries with you r own working partitions
boot from USB device by pressing 'option' during startsequence
use EFI boot entry
use your kernel_image to boot
thats it
this will give you a new option to boot the 3.10 arch-kernel directly from the refit menu entierly bypassing grub which is needed for the switching to work properly
the /boot/efi/ is where my efi paritition gets mounted in Linux. The efi partition is where you need to put the files for efi(refind) to detect your kernel and initrd. if you cannot see it. Check gparted for it. It has a fat32 filesystem and should have the label EFI.

Hi,
I just received my new (or rather old) macbook pro 8,2 early 2011. Basic install went fine, I successfully boot from reFINd.
My main concern is related to the video: I've successfully run non-dkms intel (using
"fbdev" "root=LABEL=arch-root ro radeon.modeset=0 i915.modeset=0"
but that doesn't allow xrandr to detect an external monitor. I've also successfully used
"test: enable ati only" "root=LABEL=arch-root ro radeon.modeset=1 i915.modeset=0"
which seems to use the ati card (using xf86-video-ati). Here I can see and use
my external display, but it's sucking 32w of power (intel above: 20w) and the
cooling system is very audible.
Both is not acceptible for my main working machine, is anyone here successfully
running an intel-only setup with external display support? Actually, even the power
consumption with intel only is too much (tranlsates to 3.5h of run time on battery),
but at least it's silent.
Offline
Partially answering my own question here: found strong evidence in mac forums
that the intel graphics card cannot drive external displays even with OSX,
so my only other option would be to reduce power consumption for ati drivers.
does it make sense to try the catalyst drivers? Any other power consumption
reduction tricks I might have missed (installed laptop-mode, acpi, and
powertop doesn't have anything to complain really, but shows 32w anyway).

Hey there,
I have run extensive search on GPU switching on the mbp 8,2, although it has been almost a year since.
You are correct, the intel card can't for whatever reason run an external.
My main concern is related to the video: I've successfully run non-dkms intel (using
"fbdev" "root=LABEL=arch-root ro radeon.modeset=0 i915.modeset=0"
but that doesn't allow xrandr to detect an external monitor.
When you do this, are you sure the AMD card is powered off ? I'm curious myself.
if you're not interested in gpu switching:
I use refind to boot the kernel directly (with amd on) or load up grub2 and use the magic gmux values to turn off the amd card. This is by far the less messier solution.
The gmux values i use on grub2 are :outb 0x728 1 outb 0x710 2 outb 0x740 2 outb 0x750 0
if you're interested in gpu switching, you'll have to compile a custom kernel, here's a thread on ubuntu which kinda goes step by step:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2115317I haven't played with the last one since my ubuntu days so proceed at your own risk.
Actually nevermind i see the above poster found a better way, i'll give it a try.
I have not used the catalyst drivers since its generally acknowledged they are of poor quality.

hey guys.
i solved the problem with help from tomodachis instructions. im usingn a macbookpro 8.3 late 2011.
the magic thing is the EFI stub boot - that means you boot the kernel directly without help from GRUB2 aso.
Now I can successfully use the ATI card and also use an external display for dual head.
VGA_swicheroo ive not tested but it should work.
Have arch installed and running in efi mode using the opensource radeon driver
copy your actual kernel and initrd from your boot partition to the efi partition [/boot/efi/EFI/arch/]
then copy the refind .iso with dd to an usb stick or install on your mac [i've tested the usb variant]
create a the file /boot/efi/EFI/arch/refind_linux.conf enter this into it: "Boot with sda6" "root=/dev/sda7 add_efi_memmap modprobe.blacklist=i915 radeon.modeset=1 elevator=noop vt.handoff=7 ro
replace the sda* entries with you r own working partitions
boot from USB device by pressing 'option' during startsequence
use EFI boot entry
use your kernel_image to boot
thats itthis will give you a new option to boot the 3.10 arch-kernel directly from the refit menu entierly bypassing grub which is needed for the switching to work properly
the /boot/efi/ is where my efi paritition gets mounted in Linux. The efi partition is where you need to put the files for efi(refind) to detect your kernel and initrd. if you cannot see it. Check gparted for it. It has a fat32 filesystem and should have the label EFI.

screen turns black the moment i issue:
echo IGD > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
