XFCE Startup

After starting XFCE if I end/quit the session and start it right after (startx), I get a blank screen with the cursor blinking.  It stays like this forever until i ctrl-alt-del to restart.  Is anyone aware of this?

Re: XFCE Startup

I just switched to xfce4 today (meaning I've been in and out of it alot) and I haven't noticed this myself.

I don't use xfce myself, however instead of ctrl-alt-del use ctrl-alt-backspace it will kill X and not reboot your system big_smile

I tried ctrl-alt-backspace and that didn't kill X.  I'm not sure what's going on.  It doesn't seem X even starts.

Re: XFCE Startup

Ok, the problem is with X.  Even when using a different WM/DE like Fluxbox I still get the same reaction.  I even killed X (ctrl-alt-backspace) within Fluxbox and couldn't get back in it.  I got this message after killing it:

"waiting for X server to shut down X connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown)."

Re: XFCE Startup

seelk, are you running ATI proprietary drivers with kernel 2.6.15 perchance?

Yes, but I'm not really sure if the drivers are running properly:

$ fglrxinfo
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.2.1)

$ lsmod | grep fglrx
fglrx                 454304  0
agpgart                36040  1 fglrx

How do I uninstall the ATI drivers?

Re: XFCE Startup

Aha!  The ATI proprietary drivers, unpatched, freeze up Xorg when it quits if you're using kernel 2.6.15.  Look around for other ATI threads and you'll find the patch (specifically for the thread called something like "fglrx lockups.. blah blah")

Re: XFCE Startup

So that means I shouldn't install the proprietary drivers huh?  Will the patch, patch the proprietary drivers?

Re: XFCE Startup

Yup, I'm running the patched ATI proprietary drivers here without a problem.  I think there's a PKGBUILD for them in the AUR to go with the stock ARCH kernel.  Look for ati-drivers-ARCH or something similar.

Re: XFCE Startup

Does that apply to this package that I used:  ati-driver-installer-8.21.7-i386.run ??
