Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

hello everybody. i've read quite a bit of this thread, decided to finally emerge from the lurking shadows and created yet another account on the web.
i'm mila and i've been running arch for nearly 1.5 years now. (isn't it funny how every introduction like this seems like an alcoholics anonymous meet?) i've used windows from 3.1, stuck with 98 until 2006 when i moved to ubuntu - my cousin introduced me to redhat somewhere around 2000, but linux didn't stick on me back then. in 2009 i got a laptop with vista and coped with that for a couple years, until the urge to run far away from microsoft emerged again and i re-tried ubuntu. i was frankly dissappointed with how canonical seems to work nowadays (what with their useless package dependencies everywhere and mostly thinking about the latest and most powerful hardware and disregarding older machines). so... i happened to read about arch and fell in love with the philosophy, installed it, took only two tries and after that never had to install again!
arch, along with teaching me some deeper understanding of linux, helped me realize that i'd never be quite satisfied with a system i can't (meaning both "not allowed to" and "don't know how to") control. arch also made me understand that i've been a bit of a hacker most of my life. now i've a desktop with awesomewm, visual appearence is pretty minimal and just the way i like it, most gui-centered applications are stripped away and most things work mainly on keyboard. my favourite web browser for now is uzbl, editor of choice is vim.
i'm glad there's such a great community around arch, the wiki and these forums have helped me out from quite a few pickles and i still don't feel the need to actually ask anything because most things are already discussed. KISSes to all of you. <3
(edit/p.s. i hope that this wasn't too detailed and lengthy of an intro, haha)

@ milakitu,

Welcome to the forums. Please make sure that you do not bash other OS/Distros as outlined here:

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fo … ng_Systems

Regarding the choice of your browser. Seeing that uzbl hasn't been updated for a while, you might want to give dwm dwb, or luakit a try.

Edit: I meant dwb, not dwm tongue

@ x33a,
thank you!
yeah, i realize i was stepping a bit on the hazy lines calling windows vista a pos... so i edited it. i understand that no bashing should be happening and that's not what i was meaning to do. other than that, i assume that was ok?
and mm, i know. i used dwb (which i assume you mean by dwm) for quite a while, briefly tried luakit but both had their problems for me so i settled with uzbl. i know it's been pretty unmaintained, but i've sort of gotten used to that for now... there are some pretty big bugs (like the flash crashing stuff etc) but otherwise it seems to work fine.

Yes, it's fine. Also, I would like to add that criticizing something isn't wrong per se, it's just that we try to keep such stuff out of the forums. There are other places for that wink

yeah, gotcha. while it's good and right to be able to criticize whatever bugs you, it's also good to keep brilliant internet forums such as this relatively clean of all those huge flame wars that this type of criticism usually seems to lead to. nobody likes that.

oh and as an afterthought: this is precisely one of the things i like about this community. if it works for you, then it's for you. no pushing. it's also something i've tried to keep as a principle when helping my friends with computers. i try to approach this computing stuff from every viewpoint and not judge any way of seeing it, despite some possible personal bias against some big companies. :'D

Meaning people won't want to help me out if I am not running Arch? So far, all I've done is take a look at the Arch-wiki to get my install up & running.
Parabola is not a derivative in the proper sense of the word imo, 99.9% is Arch.

And thank you. I like it so far, even if all I did was basic stuff.

Most likely.

If it's not 100% identical then it's not the same and you could be experiencing a bug that is only present in Parabola and not in Arch. That could lead to people wasting their time trying to understand an issue that doesn't even exist in Arch.
Btw if Parabola is nearly identical as you claim, then why not just use Arch?

Looking at the Parabola wiki it's clear that there are repositories that are definitely not identical to Arch.

You can drag in parabola's repos and it will try to knock off any non-libre Arch repos.

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi everyone,

A couple of montsh ago I started reading a book about  the linux kernel. I don't make giant leaps but I still try to read a couple of pages whenever I can. And the raspberry pi seemed for me to be the perfect opportunity to try out linux and expecially mess around with the hardware. Now I don't get my hopes up and expect to be a super user in a month. It is a steady process but as long as I get better and learn a couple of new things I am happy. One day my goal would be to contribute by developing software for other users or helping them out. But hey, let's not get ahead of ourselves wink
Oh, and I chose Arch Linux because it is a lightweight, "get your hands dirty" distro.
I am looking forward to trying out new things and generally have a good time smile

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi,
I am new here, and I joined the linux community before 4 months. Distro hopping from one to another and settled here, although I started with ubuntu.

I have clearly no idea why I like Arch it so much ?

Cheers...

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hey guys,

Have been using ArchLinux now for over a year successful. I love the distribution and would actually never switch to another again.
Using pacman and yaourt it's easy to keep the system up to date, i never had a problem so far. I mainly use XFCE4 as graphical interface, but try to low my application to terminal use - so i don't automatically boot into the graphical interface.

Now after using ArchLinux so long i came up with the idea to finally donate some money into the development, may help fixing some bugs and of course register on the forums.

Hope to have a good time here,
uppectle

Re: The Official Hello Everyone Thread

Hi, Arch people,

I've been using Arch for a bunch of months, but I've just joined forums.  The thing that makes Arch favourable for me is pacman and packaging.  Using PKGBUILDs, I've been able to reliably automate the installation process, and easily package software for my personal use.  If you ever tried making a debian package, you'd appreciate the simplicity and beauty of PKGBUILDs.

I've enjoyed Arch linux for the good part of this year and  for some months -- sporadically -- in the past year.  A big thanks from me to everybody that develops Arch.
