[SOLVED] switching to TTY then back to X, X is broken

if I switch to TTY using ctrl+alt+f1 and then go back to my X session using ctrl+alt+f7, I get a mouse cursor but a black screen. I can seem to interract with things (e.g. I managed to play a youtube video I had open). The cursor appears and moves as normal but everything below it is just black.

I can switch back to TTY1 and reboot, but that seems to be the only way to get back into X (I can probably close and restart X but that's no ideal either)

Is there any way I can debug this in order to fix it?

You could start by looking at your Xorg log. Then, if the answer isn't readily apparent and you need help, please include some relevant information, like:

  • Your graphics card and driver

  • Your DE/WM

  • The logs

  • Anything in the journal

Just guessing: kde and nvidia proprietary drivers?
In that case, it is a known unfixed issue you can workaround with alt-shift-f12 twice  after it happens (it will disable/re-enble desktop effects)
