When I install jack2 and qjackctl, jackd starts and runs nicely; but when I install jack2-dbus, jackdbus runs fine (according to many tests via ps and jack_control), but qjackctl does not show it running and won't show a patchbay, and Catia and Cadence won't connect either. I have added myself to the "audio" group, no change. What am I missing?

afaik this is simply because qjackctl don't support the dbus interface in jack2. probably the same with catia and cadence.
if I start jackdbus via jack_control before I launch qjackctl, it recognizes that the jack server is started and works fine for me though (as do any other jack application), apart from starting and stopping the server.

That's what I'm doing -- I start Jack via jack_control first, and QJackCTL does not recognize it.

QJackCtl has a checkbox to Enable D-Bus interface on the Misc tab of Setup. Have you checked it?
I've no idea about Catia and Cadence.
