Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

the official gnome-unstable repo is definitely broken currently.  I just added it and pacman -Syu and now GDM won't start.  Oh well.... only another week or so until they "release" it...

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

That's because... it's incomplete. Bad idea to try. (Try downgrading everything you upgraded from the repo.)

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

I wonder how much wayland support has improved since 3.10.

Isn't this supposed to be a developer preview?

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

Now that GNOME 3.12 has been released and the gnome-unstable repositories have been updated, has anyone tried them yet or are they still in the process of updating all packages to 3.12 (as I see gnome-session for example to be from February 25th)?

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

I tried gnome-unstable again last night and it wouldn't load GDM. I don't see the updated version of GDM in the repo so it looks like it's still a WIP to get it all there.

I'd imagine when there's a 3.12 for everything here: https://www.archlinux.org/groups/x86_64/gnome/ then it will be ready to go.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

You could use the -git version from aur for the stuff that's missing like mutter, gdm, gnome-shell.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

I see mutter is in there now (posted today) so they are working on it. I'd be surprised if we don't see something by the end of the weekend.

I was kind enough to flag the relevant pkgs of gnome and gnome-extra groups to raise awareness. smile

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

GNOME 3.12 is a one-man show at this moment. I've been working hard last week to get the packages into the repository, but there's an additional count of >70 packages in the release set which are remaining.

Some packages build fast, some don't. The problem is not updating PKGBUILDs, but getting them built. At this moment our build machine is terribly slow and crashing now and then. It's not fun when the buildserver crashes in the middle of a big package.

Note that gnome-unstable in its current shape is completely untested and at your own risk. My list of packages affected by soname bumps is far from empty, so even when you see gnome-shell and friends appear in the repository, don't enable it until announced.

Thank you very much for your work. I think it should be clear to everybody that a DE like Gnome (or KDE) with all their components and dependencies are not as simple to update as a single application. I am sure it will be ready when it's ready big_smile

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

37 packages from apps suite remaining
37 packages from core suite remaining
19 packages affected by soname bumps remaining (includes some from above)

Note that some packages don't need an update since no new version was released for GNOME 3.12, so the list could shrink pretty fast. Sometimes the list gets bigger because of new introduced external dependencies that we don't have in our repositories, so that takes additional work and time.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

Half of the packages in one hour? I expected some more time regarding your first post tongue Very nice, maybe I'll be able to enable gnome-unstable later today then.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

Well, 37+37 makes a total of 74. Then add another 19 packages for rebuilds and you're close to 100...

Given the fact that the buildserver is completely down at this moment, I don't think we'll see GNOME 3.12 before next week.

I didn't know you were doing all the work at your own, if I had the skills, I would be happy to help.
About the buildserver, what are the problems? Is there something we can do to help?
Like building the packages/providing a build system?

It would be great if you guys could provide a VM or some solution.

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

@jgc

What are the basic requeriments for compile gnome on reasonable time? I'm working on spanish CPD and maybe I could help with a server to compile and publish it. It just I would have to limit the bandwith, 50Mbit or so.

My PC is also at your disposal if you desire. Just pm me if that's something you think could be handy. Its a 4.2ghz octocore, so it might speed some things up

Re: Gnome 3.12 Beta

I don't think that will work since they packages need to be signed by the developer in order to make it into the main repos.

Fair enough, I don't know all of the steps to getting the packages into the repos, I just had some extra horsepower that I thought I'd offer
