I have this cheap webcam that I want to use with motion.
Problem is, the image looks like this: http://i.imgur.com/9OcioB0.jpg
I've tried changing every setting in guvcview and using the LD_PRELOAD environment variable, to no avail. A long session of googling proved fruitless as well.

Have you tried changing the sharpness value? I can see an effect somewhat similar to what you show if I increase the sharpness value for my webcam.

Ramping up the sharpness makes edges look better, but what should be smooth transitions are still heavily banded. Like I said, I tried every setting exposed by v4l2.
But all this seems irrelevant. I have an identical webcam, since I bought a pair a few years ago to make some stereoscopic videos. The other camera works out of the box, on two Arch installations, with no issues, so I guess it must be a faulty device.
