I am trying to get 3d working with the ATI drivers. I have installed the kernel and have installed the drivers, ran
fglrxconfig
. I have also added the fglrx module to rc.conf and then when i boot i get the following error message:

The error message says the device was found on bus PCI 1:5:0, but your xorg.conf file has BusID PCI 1:0:0, so there is something amiss.
If you do an lspci command from the console, where does the ATI device show up? Here's mine:

Which shows that mine is on PCI 1:0:0 (the first one)
Try changing your xorg.conf file to reflect what lspci shows you.

Changed the PCI to the output of lspci and it wouldnt even bring me to the console login terminal.....any more ideas?

I changed the xorg.conf to show the output of lscpi.... I changed my xorg.conf to look like this at the end of the ATI section:

After changing my busID to "PCI:1:5:0" I was unable to even get to the login prompt (I disabled kdm for the moment) It would just quickly flash fast the login and then sit at a black screen.

You know, I've never had any luck getting fglrx to run with the internal AGP - I've always had to use the external one, so try this in your xorg.conf:
Option "UseInternalAGPGART" "no"
Of course, you need to have the agpgart and <vendor>_agp modules loaded for the external to work.
Try the external with both of the BusIDs and see what happens.

OK i have it working, but i have noticed a considerable slowdown in my computer..Apparently the reason for DRI not being enabled was a simplle BIOS setting. However i get very low framerates and have trouble with a lot of KDE apps....... Should i try using the external agpgart or would it produce the same result? If i wanted to try the external agpgart i would have to add agpgart to the modules list in rc.conf and thats all?

What sort of BIOS setting - AGP enabled?
Problems in 2D and 3D might be entirely different things. If you run the command glxinfo from the console, does it say in the output that direct rendering is enabled? It sounds like MESA (sofware 3D) is doing the DRI instead of your hardware if your 3D is so slow. Also, do an lsmod command from the console - you should see the module fglrx loaded in the listing.
To use the external agp modules, you should see two modules (agpgart and <vendor>_agp (vendor being amd or nvidia, etc) in the list of loaded modules that you get from the lsmod command. If you're using the Arch default kernel, they are probably loaded already by default.

no, my graphics card has Hypermemory (where it has dedicated memory, but allows you to add system memory for use as well). So i was on a forum ( www.notebookanalysis.com ) that deals only with my model of notebook, and saw someone with the same blank screen as mine, so they go it to work by using only shared video memory. So i changed that and it worked.
When i type glxinfo i get this:

which tells me that DRI is enabled.....however after running glxinfo, it gives me the information above, but does not bring me back to a command line, almost as if it is frozen. There are several other applications that freeze constantly while using them.

i see fglrx is loaded along with agpgart and amd64_agp..... does this mean that my modules are looking for external agpgart?
I am using the archck kernel because i thought that was the only way i could use the ati-drivers package from community.....
I have also tried re-running the fglrxconfig, but it hasnt solved anything.
Any help would be appreciated!!

Hi,
Yes, you've got direct rendering switched on, and the agpgart and amd64_agp modules are loaded so you should be able to run with the external agp if you're not already. I'm not sure what kind of performance difference you'll experience between internal and external agp.
The freezing in the console application and also on shutting down the system is a little bug in the latest ATI drivers. Someone has just created a fix for this , so should be able to get the patched version soon.
What kind of framerates are you getting with glxgears? I get about 2000 with my Radeon 9600 Pro. You should be able to play something like UT2004 at 800x600 with no slowdown at all.

It's in the arch community package repository (AUR) by the looks of it: ati-drivers 8.21.7
Your glxgears look ok. What games are you trying to play? With that chipset, you're not going to get great framerates for Quake 4 or Doom3.
