Pacman unclear on file ownership

For some reason pacman does not seem to know what files are owned by which packages, particularly X related packages.  For instance:

root@arch:~ # pacman -Qo /usr/include/X11/bitmaps/xsnow
No package owns /usr/include/X11/bitmaps/xsnow

Pacman seems to work fine for other files; I've tested /etc/rc.d/acpid for instance, and it is owned by acpid 1.0.4-1.

I am trying to upgrade to xorg7, and this is causing the upgrade to fail due to file conflicts.  I believe that if pacman knew these files were owned by packages that are just being upgraded I would not have this problem.  This is the same problem whargoul has in this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … filesystem
But it is not clear how it was resolved.  I did try the suggestion in that thread of upgrading the already installed xorg6.8.2 in an attempt to recreate the file ownerships with no luck.  I'd like to avoid forcing the xorg7 install if possible.  Any ideas?
