Clock shifted to the future after suspend/resume

I'm experiencing strange issue with resuming from suspend to RAM (sleep). When the system is put to sleep and resumed, the clock/date/time is shifted 2 days and 20 hours into the future (68 hours, 244800 seconds, or 4080 minutes - always the same). Both hardware clock and system clock appear to be shifted, but... if I force the shutdown (using power button or turning off the power) RTC seems to be intact! Unfortunately, when doing proper shutdown the clock is synced and bios/uefi is indicating wrong date.

The best part is that only first sleep/resume cycle is affected, subsequent sleeps and resumes do not change the date. It seems that during resume RTC is returning different date than the one set, and after next resume the difference is the same since RTC was not changed.

Here is the log from console (using last install CD but the issue remains with current software):

I've tried a lot of different things to resolve (changing clocksource, messing with acpi_os_name, resetting the bios) but nothing seems to be changing. It was working couple of weeks ago - since than I've updated arch, changed from catalyst to radeon, and updated the bios (unfortunately can not be reverted). Downgrading kernel and systemd to the state from 1st September doesn't fix anything. Probably this is bios issue (although Windows is not affected), but somehow connected with kernel interaction with RTC. Simpy writing 'mem' to /sys/power/state is also changing the clock, ntpd is disabled, adjtime file is not present.

My current workaround is to do 'ntpd -g -q' after each resume but proper solution would be nice as this is driving me crazy (and not working offline)! Would be glad for any help! smile

Re: Clock shifted to the future after suspend/resume

I've no clue.   I am curious as to what happens after a second sleep.  Does the offset double, or does it remain the same?

No, it remains the same, I can do any number of sleep/resume cycles and clock is stable (but wrong).

There is one more curious thing, if I fix the hwclock after first resume and do another sleep without reboot - RTC offset is sometimes (but not always) doubled but system clock is fine. Unfortunately I don't know yet how to reproduce it in consistent manner - will try later.

I'm almost sure that this is MSI specific bug as I've just tried another board (with the same chipset and similar bios version) and the clock shift is exactly the same!

Whoops.   I really did read that; I just did not comprehend (apparently)

Re: Clock shifted to the future after suspend/resume

Do you have a file called /etc/adjtime  ?? If so, what is in it?

Re: Clock shifted to the future after suspend/resume

Currently:

% cat /etc/adjtime
0.000000 1385420469 0.000000
1385420469
UTC

It doesn't matter if it is present, not present or having big numbers for adjustment - the behavior is the same. This was actually my first hope for fix but no...

Re: Clock shifted to the future after suspend/resume

I've registered here just to let you know this bug is not MSI-specific. I'm struggling with this clock shifting after resume on my wife's ASUS N52D with Ubuntu 13.10 (Linux 3.11). Exactly the same 68 hours, 244800 seconds! Tried a lot of kernel options concerning ACPI support & clocksource, removed /etc/adjtime, and so on -- nothing seems to help.

Re: Clock shifted to the future after suspend/resume

It is good to know that this is not MSI specific, I will try to check it more under windows and maybe try to post the kernel bug.

Unfortunately I have not found any solution. Since I don't left the PC suspended for more than 68h my workaround is to push back the time if suspend time is greater than 68h. Unfortunately there are cases when the drift is lower, on the other hand ntpd fixes them as soon as network is up.

Re: Clock shifted to the future after suspend/resume

Yes, it seems to be a kernel bug. Previously, my wife used Windows for years and nothing like this happened. Now, she tells a lot about Linux systems :-)

An example of this very-ugly-workaround for somebody who'll find this topic struggling with the same problem:

$ cat /etc/pm/sleep.d/99_fix_time_shift
#!/bin/bash
#
# fixing https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=173487

case "$1" in
  suspend)
    date +%s > /tmp/suspend.log
    ;;
  resume)
    was=`cat /tmp/suspend.log`
    now=`date +%s`
    # time shifts for 68 hours
    if [ $now -gt `expr $was + 244800` ]; then
      date -s "`date -R --date="-68 hours ago"`"
      ## sleep 30; ntpdate ntp.ubuntu.com
    fi
    ;;
  *)
    ;;
esac

Re: Clock shifted to the future after suspend/resume

I have almost the exact same issue these days.

My time shifted to 2078, many years in the future. And the RTC time stays right

Lenovo laptop, kernel version 6.6.10

This thread is ten years old. Please do not necrobump.

Instead, start a new topic (which you can marked solved when you find a solution) and link back to this one if you think it still applies. Unless this is still a Manjaro system, in which case please ask on their forum.
