New ATI drivers rock!

First thanks to the Arch community for putting the patch that solves the shutdown issue for this driver out there. The Arch family is the best!

The new linux 8.21.7 driver from ATI has completely changed my opinion of which graphics chip to use for my linux systems. I'm a Quake 4 addict and this driver makes the performance of my Radeon9600Pro amazing when playing this game on linux. The framerates have increased noticeably, but more importantly that shading and texturing has improved to the point where I'm flabbergasted.
I have two Arch machines, one with the radeon and another with an Nvidia card. Up until now I've always accepted the fact that NVidia has put more effort into their linux drivers, but not anymore. I'm playing Quake4 on both machines and with this new driver the Radeon makes the game look so much better.

Anybody else notice this sort of improvement?

I didn't try yet but maybe my problem with configuration of X would be saved.
Which kernel do you have? Do you have xorg 7? Do you have a configuration program?
Thanks.

Re: New ATI drivers rock!

Actually, I just noticed today that, since I upgraded my drivers, whenever I try to quit X (or run a fullscreen game like Q3) the system locks up.  I've got the patch applied, so it's likely a different issue.. I'm going to try with older drivers if I can find the graphical installer for them online somewhere.

Re: New ATI drivers rock!

I've got the latest stock kernel 2.6.15.2 and I'm using the ati-drivers-arch from the AUR unsupported repository - this package solves the problem with the system hanging on shutdown. I've got xorg 6.8.2 - I don't recommend xorg 7.0 at this point as ATI did not test the drivers on it yet.

Re: New ATI drivers rock!

Allright, this is bizarre... I rolled back to a version of the drivers I _KNOW_ I had working (8.20.8) and it's still locking up when I try to quit X.  It probably has something to do with Xorg 7... and I'm pretty sure it's the drivers that are at fault, since the 'radeon' driver works fine.  BLAH.

Something really wierd is going on here... damned ATI... anyway, apparently I'm the odd man out here, so disregard my problems.  I'm sure I'll figure 'em out eventually.

theres a thread on here about lots of people having this problem since the 2.6.15 kernel upgrade, you didnt upgrade your kernel at the same time did you?

Jefg60, I appreciate the help, but I've been one of the active posters in that thread helping other people out.  There was a patch listed that is supposed to have fixed the 2.6.15 problem, which I've applied, and which is why 8.20.8 was working for me together with that kernel a little while back.
Other symptoms, such as glxgears freezing on exit, are not happening.  Simply every time I try to shut down X, or the one time I tried loading Quake 3, it happened... it's bizarre.
I'm trying now to figure out what the heck I did differently last time. tongue

Re: New ATI drivers rock!

Small update on my status:  I found out that it IS the same problem, except the patch isn't fixing it, in either 8.20 or 8.21 versions of the driver.  So, I've reverted to the 2.6.14 archck kernel (regrettably) until ATI gives the thumbs-up for 2.6.15.  Gr.

Anywho, back to the real topic at hand; yeah, the 8.21 drivers are working like a charm with 2.6.14 kernel; Quake 3 framerate's really nice.

thanks wink

thank dibble for creating the original ATI driver PKGBUILD, and S1G1 for adding it to the AUR for the vanilla kernel. I just adopted it and added it to community smile

Re: New ATI drivers rock!

Thanks iphitus for putting it into community-rep and nirvanix for using and testing it ;-)

I'm right now trying to get them working with all the xorg7-stuff. Maybe you'll find a ati-drivers-arch-xorg7 package in the AUR.. *g*

Re: New ATI drivers rock!

I just wanted to mention that I had no luck with xorg 7.
xorg 7 and ati (without dri) was working but i got other issues (for example switching to "non-X-console" didn't work no more).

I gave up trying it. Because my backup tar.bz2-archive couldn't be recovered for what reason ever I'm reinstalling Arch atm...
