Hi,
i'am having problem with acceleration with Intel 915GM graphic card after i upgrade kernel from 2.6.12.5 to 2.6.13. Before this i'am using driver from http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/ and it was working fine. I tried to do the same things with 2.6.13 but is not ok, it takes about 10 sec for wimdow manager to appear after startx & the acc is very bad although the driver installation from http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/ was successful. Hi !
I have the same problem here on a laptop Dell D410 : The dri is very slow.
I have also another problem : my cpu load is always relatively high (>30%) whereas it is not the case on a Ubuntu with same xorg.conf and same modules loaded. It seems the kernel 2.6.13 is not really good for the i915 chipset.
Have you tried a 2.6.12 ?

at the moment i'am on 2.6.13.4-1. I think i'll wait official kernel 2.6.14 from Arch respo. Anyway, any info that tell 2.6.14 will solve this prob?

I am testing 2.6.14-rc4
I don't have the high cpu load anymore.
The dri is still slow (~900fps with glxgears)
Wireless doesn't seem to work, but I have not tried many things about it yet.
I think the next official 2.6.14 arch kernel should be almost perfect for me

just install new driver for i915 (common + specific driver), Xorg 6.9rc1 binary & modules from http://dri.freedesktop.org/snapshots/ & the result still the same.....

Home compiled 2.6.14.3 with
xorg on AUR and DRI snapshots
everything works even if the DRI is still slow.

Did anybody ever figure anything out with this chipset? I'm experiencing the same problems as you guys on an HP Compaq nc6220. High CPU usage, slow dri. I'm using the latest arch (noodle) and i believe the kernel's .15? It at least boots and apps work, but the system seems...sluggish.
Wondering if I can get some generalized help with this machine (I'm new to linux and really don't know what I'm doing)

Try to boot in console mode (in /etc/inittab, set default to 3 instead of 5)
Then login and type "top":
At the top, look at the %CPU line (or something like that. You should have some values for user, system and idle). The idle value should be high (about 99%) whereas the user and system values must be low.
If not, you are exeperiencing the same pb as me. I didn't manage to figure out what the pb is and add to compile my own kernel... You can also try another kernel like the -archck version.
In the columns, look at the process that takes the most CPU (it should be low <5%). If not, give us the name of this process.

The CPU line:
sy jumps from ~ 20% - 50% every 5 to 10 seconds (causing the id [i'm assuming stands for idle] to change respectively). The idle never drops below 80%. There is no process which takes more than 5%. In fact "top" takes the most at 1.2% every few seconds while everything else tays at 0.0%.

Ok, so this is not a problem with a specific application.
Do you hear some write/read access to your drive every 5 or 10 seconds ?
(That could be the cause of your sys jumps )
I had this pb once but it disappeared when I built my own kernel...
Try maybe the archck kernel.

No, I don't hear any HD activity, and I don't see the HD activity light going. Very strange happenings. Perhaps I will try the archck kernel as you suggest. Thanks for your help.

Don't know, but I've got the same chipset and it was working fine with kernel 2.6.12 , xorg cvs and the (then) latest dri snapshots back in july.
It's working relatively fine now with 2.6.15 and Xorg 7.
Not sure what do you guys mean by slow dri and how one can test it, but a game such as ppracer is running smooth and just fine. Do you have problems with it? I must admit that lbreakout2 skips.

This card isnt a 'crappy card you buy'. Its integrated on the mobo, so yeah it sucks for 3D, but is capable enough for all but the higher end games. I run ET on my integrated video fine.
Chances are this person doesnt want/need/cant afford a better card. Integrated should work fine

Or perhaps it's a laptop issued to me by my place of employment and I like to use Linux when I don't have to use MS.
I don't think the issue is with the graphics card solely...as you see from an earlier post of mine, running top from a cli shows the sy process to jump between 20 & 50% and NEVER falling below 20%...true, gl stuff runs slowly in a gui but so does other stuff so I don't believe it's limited to (possibly including) the video chipset.
Now, I just have to figure out how to either compile my own kernel, or use the provided patchsets. Can anyone point me in the direction of some very detailed instructions? The ones on the wiki leave me a little...confused.

You should remove the comment files (beginning with #) it would be MUCH easier to read.
And I agree with Alethos, I don't think it's an issue with the graphics card solely... DRI was working fine with previous xorg. I haven't managed to get it work with xorg7.0 yet but I must say I didn't insist.
An maybe it is even not a pb with the chipset...

Just looking around the forums and came across this post

which has something to do with direct rendering.
I tried to pacman -R mesa but it returned the error
error: this will break the following dependencies:
mesa: is required by xorg-clients
I'm running xorg 7 from testing (which is why I can't remove it?). Perhaps one of you who isn't using 7 could try to remove mesa and let us know what happens.
