[SOLVED] Some issues with port forwarding

I apologize advance if this question may not be appropriate for ArchLinux forum at all, but...

Anyway, I have CenturyLink as my ISP and their Actiontec C1000A modem/router that came along. I login via PPPoE and everything works fine. To my surprise, the modem setup page is fairly extensive and includes the port forwarding option. I want to run a ssh daemon to access my computer remotely, however that's where the problem first arose.

I forward port 12345 to my local machine, configure the sshd appropriately and run it. From my laptop, I can connect to my local machine just fine, so the sshd works (I'm guessing?). But when I use my remote IP, it doesn't work. And it's strange because it's simply not giving me any errors, it just tries sits at an empty screen waiting for something to happen. I tried different ports. Then I thought "Well I messed something up with my sshd, let me try Apache". I follow the same procedure, apache is running fine, but when I enter my remote IP, the operation actually times out after some time.

I've disabled UPnP, even enabled DMZ hosting in the modem's configuration page, but that doesn't seem to help. CenturyLink says they're not blocking any ports other than 25. Actually, when I use an online port scanner tool, it shows my ports as open. But something is still amiss here.

Any ideas? And if you think this doesn't really belong here, please tell me where to ask here - I'm kind of at a loss here.

Thanks.

Re: [SOLVED] Some issues with port forwarding

Just had to do this for bittorrent and forgot to enable the rule.  Look for these things:

1) is sshd listening on the forwarded port?
1a) is the rule pointed at the correct internal ip address and the from and to ports are correct?
2) is there a box next to the forwarding rule to enable?
3) Use grc.com/shields up to verify port is open through your router.

You can only connect to your remote IP/port from outside your LAN. If you want to test it is working, tether to your phone and ssh from there...

...mother of mercy...

Now I feel really stupid.

It works. Thanks a lot, Jason.
